Square Enix surprised fans by releasing the original Final Fantasy 7 on GOG (Good Old Games), bringing more players into the fold 29 years after the game’s original launch on the PlayStation. This new version of Final Fantasy 7 has a few quality-of-life features for players to consider and is currently available at a steep discount on GOG for a limited time.
Originally released in Japan in January 1997, Final Fantasy 7 was the Final Fantasy franchise’s first foray into 3D graphics, and the first title in the series to launch on a non-Nintendo system. Final Fantasy 7 tells the story of Cloud Strife, an ex-SOLDIER who finds himself dragged into a conflict over the fate of the planet. The main threats to Cloud and his allies are the Shin-Ra Electric Power Company and the superhuman swordsman known as Sephiroth. Final Fantasy 7 has been lauded for its plot twists, with the fate of one main cast member still remembered to this day. The story of Final Fantasy 7 is currently being retold via the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, with the yet-unnamed third part still in development.
A New Final Fantasy Game Was Just Announced, But It’s Not What You Would Expect
The legendary RPG franchise is branching out in a surprising new direction, trading digital screens for a social experience fans won’t want to miss.
Final Fantasy 7 Has Arrived on GOG
Now, one of the most replayed Final Fantasy games in the franchise’s history is available for more players to experience on PC. Final Fantasy 7 has arrived on GOG and is currently priced at $4.79 until Sunday, March 8. Afterward, Final Fantasy 7 will go back to its $11.99 MSRP. In accordance with the storefront’s long-standing policy, Final Fantasy 7 on GOG is free of digital rights management (DRM), meaning no online connection or activation is required to play the game once purchased. The updated port was co-developed by Square Enix and FINE Co., Ltd. Final Fantasy 7 also has some new features that are consistent with the pre-existing console ports. These new quality-of-life features include a 3x speed mode to change the pace of the game, the ability to turn random battle encounters off, an autosave feature, and a battle enhancement mode that allows players to restore their HP and MP during battles, along with a fully-charged Limit gauge.

- Battle Enhancement Mode (Full HP/MP/Limit Gauge On Command)
- Random Battle Encounters Toggle (On or Off)
Along with the GOG launch, Final Fantasy 7 on Steam was re-released with the same aforementioned features. Ergo, Final Fantasy 7‘s 2013 Steam port was delisted from Valve’s storefront as of this writing. However, Final Fantasy 7 players who already bought the previous Steam port now have access to the new version as a separate download at no additional cost. Plus, the 2013 Steam port of FF7 is still available for previous buyers to download and install as necessary. However, it remains to be seen what mod support the new version of the original FF7 will have compared to the 2013 port.
GOG’s Final Fantasy Catalog is Currently Discounted
Final Fantasy 7 is the fifth Final Fantasy title to be available on GOG, following the arrivals of Final Fantasy 3 3D Remake, Final Fantasy 4 3D Remake, Final Fantasy 8 Remastered, and Final Fantasy 9. GOG stated that each Final Fantasy title on its storefront, including Final Fantasy 7, is 60% off until March 8. The total discounted price of each Final Fantasy game currently on GOG is $33.95, before taxes and fees are applied. Given that each of GOG’s Final Fantasy titles has different battle mechanics, first-time players looking to dip their toes into the series now have an excellent opportunity to do so.
Like the Steam version, Final Fantasy 7 on GOG does not have steep PC specification requirements. Players will need just 8 GB of RAM, a quad-core CPU, and a graphics card like the Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 Ti or newer to play FF7 on GOG without any issues. With Final Fantasy 7 turning 30 in 2027, and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake finale in its final development phases, it remains to be seen what surprises Square Enix has in store for the rest of 2026.
