2K Game is Shutting Down on May 19

In 2023, developer Visual Concepts and publisher 2K Games set out to bring back a classic game-type that had been missing for some years, but unfortunately that journey is at a premature end, with said title beginning its official shut down procedures on May 19. 2K Games is perhaps most known for its sports title, with Visual Concepts being most known for the NBA and WWE 2K series, but this was something a little different.

The timing is most likely not a coincidence. Visual Concepts just saw a wave of lay-offs that, reportedly, impacted the WWE 2K team moreso than the NBA 2K team. That said, the lay-offs were company-wide. It’s not confirmed that this shutdown relates to these layoffs, but it would not be surprising given it was an open-world live service game. Further, it could possibly be due to a license expiration between 2K and LEGO since the shut down is taking place a full three years after its initial release.

The game in question is LEGO 2K Drive, the first LEGO-based kart racing game in years, and it will no longer be available for purchase as of May 19, 2026, on any storefront: Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and so forth. While the initial idea of a new LEGO kart racing game excited many, it did launch to mixed reviews. LEGO 2K Drive‘s open world was fun, its gameplay stood tall too, but its live-service nature was heavily criticized.

Once May 19 rolls around, no one will be able to purchase the game. Those who do own it will be able to play online multiplayer until May 31, 2027, so there will still be activity for the next year or so. However, once these procedures begin (and this is more warning than some games, especially licensed games shutdown), player counts typically drop and aren’t great to begin with. It’s worth noting that, at that time, LEGO 2K Drive may still be playable offline unlike many other shut downs. Its story mode, local split-screen, and vehicle customization are all playable offline, but given the nature of the game, it is essentially stunted for anyone who does want to play. It’d be like playing Call of Duty offline, essentially.

That said, this is far from the worst-case scenario. Many games are completely dead when they are taken offline, and while no one can digitally purchase it after May 19, there’s always ways around that. Games like Anthem shut down online servers and are instantly dead, and licensed games like Cars 3: Driven to Win don’t even get any warning before being taken down.

Gamers have four days to add LEGO 2K Drive to their digital libraries, and a little more of a year left to play with friends online. Even after that, they can still access and play the game offline even if it’s a “compromised” version of the game. That’s the ask of the Stop Killing Games movement, and this shutdown shows how such a thing can exist.
