New Steam Game Is Like Super Mario Odyssey But With Pizza Instead of Cappy

New Steam Game Is Like Super Mario Odyssey But With Pizza Instead of Cappy

Steam has an upcoming 3D platformer called Pizzapocalypse 2, which has serious Super Mario Odyssey vibes, with one of its primary mechanics being a versatile pizza instead of Mario’s beloved Cappy. Pizzapocalypse 2 is being developed by a small indie team known as Monkey Strike Games, which released the previous entry in the franchise as a free-to-play title on Steam.

Pizzapocalypse 2 is already on many 3D platformer fans’ radars, largely because of its predecessor’s success. The first Pizzapocalypse game reached over 50,000 players on Valve’s storefront and currently holds a very positive average user rating, with 96% of players recommending the game. According to the developer, the sequel “serves as a reimagining of what [the team] always wanted the original game to be.”

Planned for release in 2027, Pizzapocalypse 2 lets players use an elastic pizza to perform several gameplay-defining moves, similar to how the Cappy gimmick worked in Super Mario Odyssey. Players can use it to cross obstacles like a hook, deploy it as a parachute to land safely, or create their own platforms to reach inaccessible areas. The gameplay premise remains the same as the first game, with players having to collect pizza ingredients. However, they can also take down hostile robots with both Mario-style melee attacks and their handy pizza companion.

If Mario Were a Pizza Chef

A dark, wavy mustache paired with an abnormally large hat on a tiny, chubby character might cause players to think of Mario, one of the most iconic characters in video game history. But the same description applies to Pizzapocalypse 2‘s protagonist, a pizza chef on a mission to save the world from an anti-pizza corporate evil. The interesting thing is that Pizzapocalypse 2 lets players customize their Mario-esque character by unlocking new outfits along the way.

One of the new features coming with Pizzapocalypse 2 that was absent from the first game is an unlocked camera. Developer Monkey Strike Games said, “This sequel improves the player experience by unlocking the camera,” teasing a feature that could make Pizzapocalypse a more appealing choice for fans of games like Super Mario. However, that isn’t the only addition coming to the platformer. Another brand-new selling point is the locations inspired by Morocco, Italy, and Greece.

Monkey Strike Games has openly said that the team has been inspired by many iconic platformer games like Super Mario Odyssey. It has also compared its upcoming title to games like A Hat in Time, another popular 3D platformer from the same era as Odyssey. In the coming months, it will be interesting to see how Pizzapocalypse 2 is received by fans of the genre and whether it manages to appeal to the same audience as these highly successful 2017 games.

The previous Pizzapocalypse game was released as a student project made in 12 weeks and was free-to-play. However, it appears that the next installment will be a paid game, though the developer hasn’t confirmed this yet.
