PlayStation 5 fans can look forward to the release of a major free-to-play fighting game within the first few weeks of 2026, as its release date seems to have accidentally been announced. 2026 looks to be an exciting year for PS5 owners, and the recent leak gives them all the more reason to get pumped up.
The big game in question is 2XKO, a two-on-two tag-team-style fighting game set in the League of Legends universe. Originally announced in 2019 under the name Project L, 2XKO has already been exciting League of Legends fans for years, promising to bring back familiar characters from Riot Games’ hit MOBA in a new format that prioritizes strategically shifting between fighters to assure victory with a balance of offensive and defensive fighting moves.

Riot Games’ new fighter pulls from the world of League of Legends, but it’s going to be a totally different gameplay experience.
2XKO Release Date
Now, 2XKO‘s release date seems to have been accidentally leaked by Riot Games by way of a trailer on YouTube that shouldn’t have been made public yet. The link to the trailer shows that it has been set to private, but it was available for public viewing long enough for some fans to pick out the very important detail of its release date on consoles, which is listed in the trailer as January 20, 2026. That will make 2XKO one of the first big games coming in 2026 for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, as Riot Games has previously announced that it will be available on both of those platforms.
PC gamers have already received their first taste of the fighting game, which is also free-to-play, through Riot Games’ official website. 2XKO‘s early access release on October 7, along with multiple closed beta sessions prior to that, have helped it to gain traction in the fighting game community. Generally accepted high points of the game so far include its easy-to-learn battle mechanics, accessible control scheme, and fun system of switching between Point and Assist characters, along with the Fuse System, which gives multiple options for achieving team synergy. It has faced some criticism for its relatively small character roster and a perception of lack of depth at the expense of accessibility, but since it’s still an early access title, Riot Games still has a little time left to bump up the roster size and iron out the wrinkles.
In its current state, there are 11 playable Champions in 2XKO, all of whom have been lifted directly from League of Legends and been given brightened-up makeovers for inclusion in the tag-team fighting game. With Ahri, Blitzcrank, Braum, Darius, Ekko, Illaoi, Jinx, Teemo, Vi, Warwick, and Yasao already in the early access roster, there’s still plenty of room to grow, as the cast of Champions in League of Legends currently sits at 172. However, there hasn’t been any official indication from Riot Games whether the upcoming launch on consoles will include a bulking up of the playable Champion roster.
While fans on PlayStation and Xbox won’t have long to wait for the arrival of 2XKO, there are a couple of other games based on League of Legends that Riot Games has planned, though they appear to be coming further down the road. An MMORPG set in Runeterra has been confirmed to be in the works, and while a release date has not been nailed down, community speculation seems to be projecting it for launch sometime during 2027. Additionally, Riot Games is planning a League of Legends-based adventure game that’s known commonly as Project F, but has also been referred to as Untitled Adventure Game, though its release date seems like it might be even further away.
