In a delightful surprise, CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive a new expansion, “Songs of the Past.” After months of rumors suggesting a return to the beloved could be imminent, the news finally broke on May 27, 2026. The base game came out in 2015, before receiving the “Hearts of Stone” expansion in the same year. The second and, at the time, final DLC launched in 2016, with “Blood and Wine” being regarded as something of a swan song. After that point, The Witcher 3 reignited its relevancy via a next-gen version that provided an even superior console experience, one that came closer to matching the footage shown in the pre-release trailers.
Putting aside the recent rampant speculation, nobody could have really predicted that we would be talking about a new The Witcher 3 expansion in 2026. If anything, a return to Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City seemed more likely, and even that would have been based on wishful thinking rather than anything concrete. So far, CD Projekt Red seemingly plans to keep most of the details under wraps; however, we know a few things about “Songs of the Past.”

The Expansion Of The Future
With the announcement of the DLC, CD Projekt Red confirmed a 2027 release year, although a specific date or season wasn’t mentioned. Still, this knowledge suggests that “Songs of the Past” should be a relatively substantial way through its development, while also indicating that it still has a ways to go before reaching completion.

Cyberpunk 2077 Or The Witcher 3: Which Game Has Better World-Building?
Here we compare the world-building in Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, two top-tier RPGs with very different settings.
While we shouldn’t base our expectations on “Hearts of Stone” and “Blood and Wine,” as it might lead to disappointment, CD Projekt Red’s expansions consistently deliver significant content. Both of The Witcher 3‘s old expansions and Cyberpunk 2077‘s “Phantom Liberty” tell main storylines that last for roughly 10 hours, and they also feature quite a bit of optional material that can keep somebody busy for far longer. Will “Songs of the Past” live up to that legacy? We won’t know until 2027.
The New Expansion Will Be Available On The PS5, Xbox Series, And PC
The Older-Gen Versions Will, Naturally, Miss Out
Due to the time gap, the expansion covers new ground to an extent, as developers simply do not revisit 10-year-old single-player games unless due to the debut of a remake or remaster. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is playable on 6 systems: PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch. Unsurprisingly, CD Projekt Red has no intention of releasing “Songs of the Past” on the original PS4 and Xbox One versions, nor will the expansion come to the Switch port.
Logically, the decision to focus on The Witcher 3‘s next-gen version found on the PS5, Xbox Series, and PC makes complete sense, and it would be extreme to expect support for 13-year-old consoles. However, we basically never have situations where developers have to pick and choose which systems receive an expansion; hell, Diablo 4′s “Lord of Hatred” came out in April and is also available on the PS4 and Xbox One.
Geralt Is Back
The Man, The Myth, The Witcher
Discourse surrounding The Witcher 4‘s announcement was dominated by the confirmation of a new protagonist, with the reveal trailer very much indicating that person is Ciri. Although we don’t know his role or whether he will be playable in some form, Geralt will be returning in the upcoming sequel, so his story should still receive a couple of new chapters.

For the upcoming expansion, CD Projekt Red instantly put any doubts to bed regarding Geralt’s role – he returns as the protagonist. Although The Witcher 4‘s existence means that we will likely get to spend more time with Geralt in the future, “Songs of the Past” might end up serving as a proper goodbye to his time as the franchise’s main character; however, that is just speculation on my end.

In addition to the captivating novels about the Witcher, Geralt, Andrzej Sapkowski also wrote some fantastic short stories to flesh out the cast.
CD Projekt Red Is Co-Developing “Songs of the Past” With Fool’s Theory
Bringing The Band Back Together
CD Projekt Red opted against flying solo, with the Polish developer deciding to bring in Fool’s Theory as co-developers. Founded by veterans who worked at CD Projekt Red during the development of The Witcher 3 (among other places), the young studio has an incredible pedigree to its name. Some of the other team members worked on the likes of Divinity: Original Sin 2, so just an all-around strong lineup of creators.
Besides “Songs of the Past,” Fool’s Theory is also co-developing The Witcher Remake with CD Projekt Red, a project that hasn’t received too many updates since its announcement. Clearly, there is a good relationship between the two studios, and it makes complete sense to bring back people who contributed to The Witcher 3‘s original greatness.
In terms of released games, Fool’s Theory resume consists of Seven: The Days Long Gone and The Thaumaturge, both of which are pretty great RPGs in their own right. I would especially recommend the latter, as it’s one of the more interesting turn-based RPGs of the last couple of years.

The minimum specs aren’t extreme by any stretch of the imagination, but everyone’s mileage will vary. If you would like to stick to older versions of The Witcher 3, that is also possible, with CD Projekt Red outlining the process on its site.
