8 Open-World RPGs With Endgames Strong Enough to Outlast the Main Story

While many games strive to impress players during the initial hours, certain titles aren’t afraid to save their best parts for later. This is often true for combat-focused open-world RPGs, many of which are lengthy enough on their own but still include robust endgame content aimed at high-level characters. Only once you’re familiar with the core mechanics are you finally ready to tackle the hardest, most imaginative challenges in the game.

The approach to endgame varies from game to game, but many titles go to great lengths to rival the main story with their high-level challenges and post-story activities. Some even turn things upside down with their ending, while others are built with almost endless replayability in mind from the get-go. Below are some of the best open-world RPGs that provide enough reasons to stick with them long after completing their main stories, with additional challenges waiting for the most prepared players.

We’re counting games with open-zone maps.

Diablo 4

Ever-Evolving Open World Brimming With Activities

Like any decent loot-focused ARPG, Diablo 4 is all about the endgame, with the main story serving as a lengthy introduction to activities players can enjoy for hundreds of hours. With its vast open world and seasonal nature, Diablo 4 is meant to be played for years to come. Even following the Diablo 5 announcement, Blizzard has more content planned for the current title, so there’s little reason to put your favorite builds to rest just yet.

8 RPGs With The Best Endgames

Even after the credits roll, there’s still plenty to do in these engaging role-playing games.

Beyond pushing into higher Torment difficulties with new seasonal builds, Diablo 4 keeps you busy with Lair Bosses, Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, and The Pit, while systems like Tempering, Masterworking, and Runewords give the equipment chase plenty of depth. The expansions take that loop further: Vessel of Hatred adds the cooperative Dark Citadel and loot-focused Undercity, while Lord of Hatred lets you chain activities together through customizable War Plans. For those who really want to test their limits, Echoing Hatred throws relentless demonic waves at your build until something finally gives.

Elden Ring

A Wealth of Content That Speaks for Itself

Like many open-world RPGs, Elden Ring doesn’t change things drastically after completing the main story path, but the game doesn’t really need to. With its sheer scope, abundance of unique enemies and bosses, entire hidden areas with great loot rewards, and endlessly cryptic storytelling, it’s hard to imagine players seeing everything it has to offer by simply reaching one of its several endings.

6 Best Open-World Games With Plenty To Do After The Story Ends

These open-world titles offer robust endgame content and plenty of side activities to keep players engaged long after the main story.

Only a small fraction of Elden Ring’s bosses are necessary to reach the ending, leaving an enormous amount of optional content to track down afterward. Some of its toughest foes are buried deep in hidden areas, giving you plenty of reasons to keep strengthening your character and upgrading your gear. A thorough first playthrough can stretch toward 200 hours, even before the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which can easily rival a full-fledged RPG in scope and length.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Among the Most Suitable for Endless Play in the Series

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is hardly the first game that comes to mind when thinking of near-endlessly replayable open-world RPGs, yet it packs several aces up its sleeve, especially thanks to Ubisoft’s final title updates. AC Shadows’ world is truly enormous, with dozens of targets to track down and assassinate, many stretching well beyond the main story that follows the Shinbakufu. Some players might even miss the entirely optional Templar hunt questline that unlocks very late in the game.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Ubisoft Next AC Remake

After Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Ubisoft’s Next Remake Feels Obvious

Black Flag Resynced proves Ubisoft can modernize a classic without losing what made it special, but another AC game needs that treatment far more.

Still, the main attraction for continued play is how its in-game seasons keep giving you reasons to return, with Corrupted Castles and refreshing contracts offering new challenges and rewards. The final AC Shadows update also added Domains: replayable challenges across five distinct maps with changing modifiers, altered bosses, and exclusive equipment rewards. Their higher difficulties can encourage you to rethink your entire combat build, even before trying Nightmare difficulty or NG+.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Unique Twist on the Endgame With a Changing World

Dragon’s Dogma 2’s main appeal is its strong emergent gameplay, which, coupled with an exquisite combat system featuring multiple vocations and the unique Pawn system, yields truly captivating results. Another notable trait of this combat-driven open-world RPG is its special approach to endgame. Pursuing the true ending takes you beyond the showdown with the Dragon and into the more challenging Unmoored World, with intriguing lore revelations and a familiar map transformed.

Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen Has Shadow of the Erdtree's Best Endgame Trick

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen’s Endgame Has Shadow of the Erdtree’s Best Trick

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen is borrowing one of Shadow of the Erdtree’s smartest endgame ideas to keep veteran players exploring.

Here, tougher enemies are only part of the picture. A crimson apocalyptic haze changes the entire look and feel of DD2’s world, while dried seabeds reveal previously unreachable areas. New bosses and urgent evacuation quests give exploration a different purpose, turning this final stretch into much more than another round of monster hunting. This shift also reflects a meta-narrative twist on the cyclical nature of the Arisen and Dragon standoff, giving you enough reasons to experience the world anew. And the brand-new Dark Arisen expansion only strengthens the appeal, adding more adventures and challenges to keep playing for.

Final Fantasy 15

Saving Some of Its Best Parts for After the Story

Another open-world RPG that probably won’t come to mind immediately, Final Fantasy 15 treats endgame in its own way, saving some of the best content for later. Given how enormous FF15 is on its own, it’s hard to tell how many players will even finish it to reach that point, but that’s an entirely different question. The game’s post-game includes several substantial additions: the sealed Menace Beneath Lucis dungeons, legendary-weapon quests, and even Pitioss, an unusual dungeon built around puzzles and platforming that challenge you in completely different ways.

Action-RPGs That Make New Game Plus Worth Playing

7 Action RPGs With Better New Game Plus Modes Than Elden Ring, Ranked

From altered combat scenarios to secret quests, gear, and bosses, these titles give you plenty of reasons to try New Game+ cycles.

As a result, finishing the story in Final Fantasy 15 opens access to substantial challenges you couldn’t complete earlier. A great example is obtaining the flying Regalia Type-F: it’s only possible after the main story, once you bring the required parts from the Imperial base to Cindy. Very few games would even dare to lock such an exciting feature behind the ending, but it seems things only start to get serious in FF15 after beating the final boss.

Monster Hunter: World

Designed for Almost Endless Replayability

Few series are built with endless replayability in mind quite like Monster Hunter. With its deeply interlocking hunting and crafting mechanics, a wealth of locations, and unique monsters to defeat, Monster Hunter: World is surely one of those games designed for continuous play rather than beating its main story and moving on to something else.

In fact, Monster Hunter: World’s main narrative serves more as a lengthy prologue to the mechanical depth that follows once you begin to fully grasp its elaborate combat system. Luckily, there are enough challenges to tackle even for seasoned hunters with high-end gear, with Iceborne doubling down on the original’s captivating endgame. Its Guiding Lands tie ongoing hunts to valuable materials for further equipment upgrades, while the toughest late-game monsters give all that preparation a proper purpose.

For even more open areas, you are always welcome in Monster Hunter Wilds, which shares much of the same hunt-and-craft appeal.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Fully Capitalizing on Its Unique Gameplay Strengths

By any standard, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a huge open-world game with plenty of things to do. Its biggest allure is the gameplay loop itself, bolstered by ongoing Nemesis rivalries, and the story’s epilogue makes full use of that. Capturing territory during the campaign is one thing, but once Shadow Wars shifts the focus toward defending your fortresses and maintaining your army, the experience takes on a different rhythm. The updated version streamlines this stretch considerably, letting you reach the true ending without the original’s lengthy siege grind.

RPGs Where A Hero Becomes The Villain

6 RPGs Where A Hero Becomes The Final Villain

A hero becoming the villain is a pretty common trope in games, but some RPGs still pull it off exceptionally well, often in ways all their own.

For fans who still can’t get enough of Shadow of War’s satisfying combat and army management, Endless Siege keeps the fortress battles going after the credits. You can recruit better captains, claim stronger gear, and keep refining your defenses or taking on other players’ fortresses through Online Conquests. All the while, the Nemesis system continues producing betrayals, unexpected returns, and rivalries so personal you won’t experience them elsewhere.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

Alive and Kicking Even Seven Years Later

Just like Diablo 4, The Division 2 shows no signs of stopping, enjoying robust support from Massive for over seven years now. Still one of the best open-world looter-shooter-slash-RPGs on the market, it’s so generous with content, activities, and game modes that most fans probably forget how long it’s been since they last played through its original story missions.

The Division 2’s campaign establishes your character and the ever-changing world before the Black Tusk invasion sends you back to reclaim Washington. Pretty soon, refining builds and tackling increasingly demanding activities become the real attraction. Legendary missions, raids, Incursions, Countdown, and The Summit give that equipment chase meaningful destinations, while territory battles, projects, events, and bounties keep the wheel turning. Some of the toughest content requires a team, but there’s still plenty to sustain solo players too, especially with another story DLC, Echoes of Central Park, launching this November. Agents, assemble!
