Sony just announced fresh price hikes for the PlayStation in several East Asian countries. The move comes just a month after similar price hikes were announced for the U.S., UK, Europe, and Japan, with the platform holder blaming global economic conditions for the steep changes.
In South Korea, for example, the disc drive PS5 will go up to ₩948,000 ($644), the PS5 Digital Edition to ₩858,000 ($583), and the PS5 Pro to ₩1,298,000 ($882), Inven Global reports. The PlayStation Portal is also going up to ₩378,000 ($250). The overall change amounts to a 43-percent jump from what the all-digital PS5 originally launched at in South Korea.

The changes demonstrate fallout from the ongoing RAM shortage and rising prices of other gaming components, as well as Sony’s increasingly uncontested dominance in the high-end console gaming market. There have been rumors that the company is engineering the PS6 to be much cheaper, but it’s hard to see the more powerful tech somehow costing less than what was released years ago. Then again, most of the current console cycle has already felt upside down.
