Warhorse’s Open-World Lord of the Rings Game Already Feels Like the GTA 6 of RPGs

Lord of the Rings fans recently got some really exciting news with the announcement that Warhorse Studios will be making an open-world Middle-earth RPG. Warhorse Studios has made an incredibly strong impression with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, so the team taking on a Lord of the Rings game sounds like a match made in heaven. The developer hasn’t really revealed anything else about the project, but there is already a huge wave of hype that has been building ever since Warhorse made the announcement.

Warhorse Studios’ Lord of the Rings game is probably several years away at this point. No matter how long the wait is, though, both diehard Lord of the Rings fans and open-world fantasy RPG lovers are going to be keeping this game on their radar while they wait for the devs to reveal more concrete details. Many gamers have been craving a well-made open-world Lord of the Rings game, and its eventual launch down the road could create the same problem that GTA 6 has created with this year’s game release calendar.

Kingdom Come Studio Warhorse Might Be Going for Bethesda’s Crown With Its Lord of the Rings Game

Warhorse’s Lord of the Rings game could turn its Kingdom Come formula into Bethesda’s most serious open-world RPG competition yet.

GTA 6 Has Created an Industry Dam, and Warhorse’s Mysterious Lord of the Rings Game Has the Potential to Do the Exact Same Thing

The wait for GTA 6 to finally get here has been a years-long situation at this point. Every single piece of news and rumor surrounding the game ignites a new burst of excitement, and Rockstar’s recent reveal that the GTA 6 pre-orders go live on June 25 has made the long-awaited game feel closer than ever. Between delays, leaks, and rumors, GTA 6‘s development cycle has been shrouded in mystery and chaos, and it has affected the industry in a massive way.

2026’s Q4 Calendar Is a Dead Zone, and GTA 6 Is to Blame

There are so many games coming out in September 2026 that it’s nearly impossible to narrow down which ones to buy, and the month is followed by October’s huge drop-off in launches. Gears of War: E-Day and Phantom Blade Zero are some of the biggest releases scheduled for October, but the lineup is nothing compared to September’s crowded roster. The reason that the fall and winter calendars are currently a black hole is because GTA 6 is slated for November 19, right in the middle of Q4.

Between delays, leaks, and rumors, GTA 6‘s development cycle has been shrouded in mystery and chaos, and it has affected the industry in a massive way.

GTA 6‘s release date creates a huge splash zone that developers and publishers are trying to avoid like the plague. No one wants to risk being overshadowed by a game that is expected to be one of the biggest launches that the gaming industry has ever seen. Rockstar has staked its claim (unless another delay happens), and there are several notable games that are suspected to have been delayed because of GTA 6 or games developers waited to reveal dates for until GTA 6‘s launch felt officially set in stone.

Games Likely Delayed Due to GTA 6

  • Forza Horizon 6
  • Fable
  • Marvel’s Wolverine
  • Control Resonant
  • Silent Hill: Townfall
  • Gears of War: E-Day
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword

The main game that has likely been delayed solely because of GTA 6 is Fable. Playground Games hasn’t officially revealed that Rockstar’s crime-filled action RPG is the driving force behind Fable being delayed until 2027, but it seems like the most likely reason. The developer seems to be especially wary of GTA 6, because the studio also launched Forza Horizon 6 in May of this year, when the franchise is usually a fall staple.

Games like Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Gears of War: E-Day, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword haven’t faced the delay woes that Fable has, but the developers of these projects all took their sweet time revealing a launch window. All of these games are coming out in September, so it feels like a calculated effort to launch before GTA 6‘s launch takes over the narrative.

There’s no way to know what Warhorse’s open-world Lord of the Rings RPG is going to look like, but it could create a similar gap in the year’s calendar once the release date is confirmed. Lord of the Rings fans have been dying for an RPG that has the same depth as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and that’s going to draw a lot of attention once the game is closer to becoming reality.

A Lord of the Rings RPG isn’t the only project that Warhorse Studios has planned for the future. The team is also working on a new Kingdom Come: Deliverance game. Details about this project are being kept under wraps at the moment, but it’s been confirmed that Warhorse Studios has the ambitious goal of releasing it sometime during the company’s next fiscal year. That would place it somewhere between April 2027 and March 2028.

The Lord of the Rings Franchise Might Finally Get the Fresh Game Adaptation That It Deserves

The past decade has been bleak when it comes to Lord of the Rings games. One of the best adaptations was 2014’s Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and it’s been incredibly hard to reach those same heights ever since, for some reason. The massive flop that was 2023’s The Lord of the Rings: Gollum marked a low point for Tolkien-inspired titles, but Warhorse taking the reins could be just what the franchise needs.

Games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are hard to come by, and the success of that game has given Warhorse one of the most positive reputations in the industry at the moment. While developers like Bethesda and Ubisoft have struggled to reach the heights of their heydays, companies like Warhorse Studios are making up a strong new roster of developers that could define the industry in the coming years.

Lord of the Rings fans have been dying for an RPG that has the same depth as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and that’s going to draw a lot of attention once the game is closer to becoming reality.

It’s not hard to imagine a scenario where Warhorse Studios builds such a positive reputation that gamers start to view the company the same way that many see Rockstar. After bringing games like Red Dead Redemption 2, the GTA series, and Bully to life, gamers expect a lot out of Rockstar-made games, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has set a similar expectation with the upcoming Lord of the Rings project.
