The Outer Worlds is upgrading a ton of players to its premium Spacer’s Choice Edition for free, with a new set of patch notes describing how to claim the DLC at no cost. This latest update to The Outer Worlds is the first since June 2023, and another pretty significant one is planned for the near future.
Obsidian’s outer space action-RPG racked up some pretty impressive scores when it was first released in October 2019, holding an all-time player satisfaction rating of 82 percent among Steam’s more than 16,000 English language user reviews. Drawing inspiration from other sci-fi IPs like Futurama and Firefly, The Outer Worlds built its popularity on its humor just as much as its story, setting, and gameplay, with an overarching narrative filled with tongue-in-cheek criticisms of corporate greed and the dangers of unrestricted capitalism and mindless brand loyalty.
Best Starting Builds in Outer Worlds 2
These six unique starting builds in Outer Worlds 2 serve as the foundation for six very different playstyles to approach the game.
More than five years after its launch, many players are now able to pick up all the DLC content for The Outer Worlds at no additional cost, thanks to a game update that makes the Spacer’s Choice Edition the only choice when buying the game. This free giveaway is due to the upcoming delisting of the base game and its replacement with the upgraded Spacer’s Choice Edition on most store pages, which is scheduled to occur on May 27. Players who already have at least the base game in their libraries on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, or GOG, will automatically be upgraded to Spacer’s Choice Edition. The official announcement from the development team indicates that this upgrade applies to anyone who has added the base game to their library by May 27, which makes it sound as though potential customers are free to purchase it now and still receive the upgrade, saving about $10 in the process.
The Spacer’s Choice Edition includes both the Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos DLC expansions, providing players with the comprehensive The Outer Worlds experience. It also features some other upgrades over the game’s original release, including an increased level cap, dynamic weather system, enhanced enemy AI, better performance, and several different graphical enhancements.
While players on PC and modern consoles will be able to take advantage of this offer, last-gen console versions won’t get the same treatment. Players on these consoles will need to own both the base game and both DLCs in order to upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition. This is especially problematic for Nintendo fans, as while PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions of The Outer Worlds have all been released, there is currently no Nintendo Switch 2 version. However, Obsidian is softening the blow for PS4 and Xbox One owners by slightly reducing its price for the base game and DLCs to $24.99 and $14.99, respectively.

The newest patch also addresses a number of issues that have been around for a long time, providing solutions to problems with several quests and general issues like clipping through the ground or becoming permanently stuck behind crates. While this patch is generally focused on some long-overdue housekeeping, Obsidian has another patch planned for the near future, and while the company won’t reveal everything about it, the next patch will introduce a new weapon type to The Outer Worlds in the form of grenades.
