New FPS Game with Half-Life Vibe Launches to Mixed Reviews, Dev Apologizes

Developer Bleakmill has apologized after its new narrative FPS adventure game INDUSTRIA 2 launched to “Mixed” player reviews on Steam. The studio was quick to address player concerns about the current state of INDUSTRIA 2, which has been in development for four years.

INDUSTRIA 2 was first announced in early 2024 as a follow-up to 2021’s INDUSTRIA. The game is described as “a narrative FPS adventure about a woman stranded in a parallel dimension,” where players must explore “a mysterious boreal landscape consumed by an ever-hungry artificial intelligence to find a way home.” The run-down city and the alien sci-fi horror elements seen in the game’s promotional material give off serious Half-Life 2 City 17 vibes, a compliment to how well that game has aged. However, it seems that’s where the comparisons end, particularly in terms of quality.

7 Games To Play If You Miss Half-Life

These games may scratch the permanent itch that was left behind by the iconic Half-Life game, with fans still holding out for a Half-Life 3.

INDUSTRIA 2 Launches to Mixed Reviews

In the wake of INDUSTRIA 2‘s launch, the new game has been met with “Mixed” Steam reviews from players. While particular praise is reserved for the game’s impressive art direction and atmosphere, its technical state is a sore point for many. Several reviews report placeholder assets, unoptimized areas, and unfinished locations with broken geometry. The game faced a last-minute delay in mid-April, as the developer pushed it back by two weeks to allow for further polish. But according to the reviews, INDUSTRIA 2 should not have been an April 2026 release, and needed much more development time to launch in good shape.

The player reviews have prompted developer Bleakmill to issue a statement on X, claiming it “hurts to be sitting at 48% positive ratings after putting all our hearts and souls into this game over 4 years.” The studio also acknowledges that critique of INDUSTRIA 2 in its current state is “fair,” and says it is “sorry to let you down everyone.” To round it out, Bleakmill says it has “work to do” if it is going to bring the game up to the standards that players initially expected.

Hopefully, the statement represents a commitment to the game going forward, and it will continue to improve the experience for players in the coming weeks and months. It’s worth remembering that nowadays, it’s not unheard of for bad or broken games at release to become much better post-launch. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 and No Man’s Sky are the blueprint in this regard, and it will be interesting to see if Bleakmill can turn INDUSTRIA 2 around. While the player reviews do highlight some negative elements, it’s important to note that there is still plenty of good, meaning the developer has a solid base to build on.

For context, the original INDUSTRIA has “Mostly Positive” Steam reviews, suggesting that this latest title is a step back from its predecessor. The first title gained a small cult following among fans of dystopian games, so it’s unfortunate the sequel has yet to live up to the hype, although there’s still plenty of time for that if the developer continues to release new updates.
