Fate of the Old Republic Has Assembled a Dream Team of Developers

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic developer Arcanaut Studios has brought together some top-tier talent for its upcoming RPG, including several veterans that worked at BioWare, specifically on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Little is known about Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic at this time, but the game is clearly being positioned as a spiritual successor to BioWare’s past games. However, players shouldn’t go in expecting a third Knights of the Old Republic, for various reasons.

While BioWare’s KOTOR games were once considered part of the Star Wars canon, that changed with the franchise’s acquisition by Disney in 2012. Since then, Knights of the Old Republic elements have come back in Star Wars, but the events of the games themselves are considered part of the Legends branding, alongside books such as Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire. It’s possible Fate of the Old Republic could add in more characters and elements popularized by the KOTOR games, especially given the veteran developers returning for this spiritual successor.

Aspyr’s KOTOR Remake Concept Art Leaked

A recent leak from the in-development remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic reveals an early piece of concept art from the game.

Fate of the Old Republic’s Dream Team

  • Casey Hudson – Game Director
  • Dan Fessenden – Senior Technical Designer
  • Caroline Livingstone – Director of Production and Performance
  • Ryan Hoyle – Chief Technology Officer
  • Melanie Faulknor – Director of External Development
  • Pascal Blanche – Art Director

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced at The Game Awards last year, where it was revealed that Casey Hudson will be serving as the game director. Hudson was the project director on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, as well as the original Mass Effect trilogy. Hudson’s Arcanaut Studios was also announced as the development team during the show, and the company has now revealed some of its key team members on its website. Notably, at least three other KOTOR veterans are returning: Dan Fessenden, Caroline Livingstone, and Ryan Hoyle.

In addition to these KOTOR veterans, Hudson has also brought in former BioWare employee Melanie Faulknor as the director of external development; she previously worked on Mass Effect 3 and multiple Dragon Age games. There’s also art director Pascal Blanche, who has 25 years of experience in the industry, having worked at Ubisoft, Behaviour Interactive, Warner Bros., and Wizards of the Coast.

One of the biggest concerns for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic fans is the fact that Arcanaut Studios is still fairly new; the studio was opened less than a year ago. However, it’s clear that Hudson has wasted no time staffing the team with plenty of veterans, and that should be something of a relief. Hudson’s name was enough to generate excitement about the project, but it takes a lot of people to make a video game. Having veterans that are experienced with BioWare’s biggest titles could help Fate of the Old Republic become the game Star Wars fans have been hoping to play for more than two decades.

Unfortunately, no one really knows how long it will be before fans have a chance to actually play the game. Development takes a long time, and it seems Arcanaut Studios is just coming together. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic rumors suggested a 2030 release, which Hudson has denied. It’s possible the game will be released much sooner, but Star Wars fans should have plenty of other games to play in the meantime, including Galactic Racer later this year.
