Gears of War: E-Day is set to be Xbox’s biggest release of the year, and it isn’t just because it’s a prequel to the entire series. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago’s early days fighting the Locust Horde is something that many fans have wanted to see for a while, but Gears of War: E-Day has even more riding on it than just its respective franchise. Xbox needs Gears of War: E-Day to be a big win, and that’s going to be a hard thing to achieve in the middle of such a stacked year.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the prequel. Not only is it putting a spotlight on a new side of Marcus and Dom’s story, but Gears of War: E-Day‘s story length is reported to be the longest in the franchise. Diving into the moment that kicked off Gears of War‘s entire lore is going to be big for longtime fans, but it has to attract more than just the players who have been there from the beginning.

Gears of War: E-Day lists its official system requirements, and it appears the game will require a hefty minimum amount of horsepower to run.
Gears of War: E-Day is Xbox’s Only Major Exclusive of the Year, and That Brings A Lot of Pressure to Its Launch
It’s not like Gears of War: E-Day is the only big game that Xbox has in the pipeline. The recent Xbox Games Showcase offered a sneak peek at plenty of great games. Most of them are slated for 2027, though, or are simply smaller releases that are unlikely to attract the same attention that a new Gears of War game is able to.
Here’s What Other Major Xbox-Owned Releases Are Coming Out in 2026
- Halo: Campaign Evolved – July 28
- Minecraft Dungeons 2 – September 29
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – October 23

The trio listed above definitely aren’t small releases. However, they aren’t fully Xbox exclusive. All three of these games are multiplatform releases, and that’s what makes Gears of War: E-Day extra unique on Xbox’s 2026 calendar. Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5 marks the first time that Xbox’s flagship series has come to a Sony console, and Minecraft Dungeons 2 continues to ride on Minecraft‘s seemingly never-ending success.
Ever since Xbox officially acquired control of Activision back in 2023, it has technically been Call of Duty‘s owner, but the military shooter’s audience stretches across all consoles and PC. Call of Duty is without a doubt a massive franchise for Xbox to have under its umbrella. It doesn’t hold the same significance as a full-blown exclusive, though. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s gameplay is going to attract players no matter what, but Gears of War: E-Day specifically has to draw gamers to Xbox.
Xbox Is in Need of a Big Win This Year
The past few years have been filled with highs and lows for Xbox, and this year in particular feels like a big turning point for the company. February marked a massive shake-up in leadership when Phil Spencer and his expected successor Sarah Bond stepped down, while new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has been making many choices that have been praised by Xbox loyalists. Sharma’s decisions to lower the price of Xbox Game Pass’ Ultimate tier, revamp the Xbox logo, and embrace exclusive titles have been high points, but she has also had to make her first round of controversial decisions, too.
Diving into the moment that kicked off Gears of War‘s entire lore is going to be big for longtime fans, but it has to attract more than just the players who have been there from the beginning.
Reports that smaller Xbox-owned studios like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games are being shut down have been shocking. That might just be the tip of the iceberg, though. Other reports have claimed that major Xbox layoffs are coming in July, which could be Sharma’s first act as CEO that will ignite a lot of intense debate.
Only time will tell what these expected layoffs will be like, but it will make Gears of War: E-Day‘s job an even bigger challenge. After so many ups and downs and internal changes, Marcus and Dom’s story has to serve as a reminder that Xbox is capable of bringing forth amazing AAA exclusives that make its products worth investing in. These potential layoffs might put a sour taste in some gamers’ mouths, and it may even risk stomping out some of the hype that has been surrounding Gears of War: E-Day.
Gears of War: E-Day Has to Be a Stellar Appetizer for Xbox’s Promising 2027 Lineup
Halo: Campaign Evolved revamps one of Xbox’s most beloved franchises, but Gears of War: E-Day feels like it could be the true game to ring in the company’s new era under fresh leadership. It’s a never-before-seen story within a major existing IP that could really get Xbox back on the right path if gamers show up for it. Gears of War: E-Day‘s release date makes it one of the last big AAA launches before GTA 6 gets here, and its performance has the potential to set the tone for Xbox next year.
Xbox’s 2027 Release Schedule Is Looking Good
- Fable – February 23
- State of Decay 3 – TBD
- Bad Magpie – TBD
- Senua – TBD
- Clockwork Revolution – TBD
Not all of these are entirely exclusive, but Xbox’s 2027 schedule definitely has a little bit more on the table when it comes to company-owned IP. It was a bummer when Fable‘s release date was delayed until February 2027, but that also gives it an interesting advantage of being one of the first big AAA launches of the year. Other games like State of Decay 3, Bad Magpie, and Senua are fun additions to the lineup, while Clockwork Revolution could prove to be an exciting new original IP for Xbox.
Gears of War: E-Day Can Hopefully Remind Gamers of What Xbox Has to Offer
Before 2027’s lineup can bring forth a year worth celebrating for Xbox, Gears of War: E-Day has to be a hit. The good news is that Gears of War: E-Day on Game Pass makes it easier to reach a younger generation that isn’t as familiar with the series, but only time will tell if that helps the prequel hit the targets that Xbox is hoping for. Everything that The Coalition and Xbox have shown about Gears of War: E-Day looks great, but it’s going to be fascinating to see how it resonates with gamers and if it’s able to be enough for Xbox to say it’s had a strong 2026.
