Hades II is already a much bigger game that Supergiant’s first entry in the series, but thanks to a new mod, it’s set to grow substantially larger. Modder NikkelM has managed to cram the whole of Hades into its sequel in a far more elegant way than you would expect from a free, solo effort.
The project, dubbed simply Zagreus Journey, lets you play through all of the content from Hades as its sequel’s protagonist, Melinoe. This means revisiting areas such as Styx, Tartarus, Elysium, and more and go toe-to-toe with all the foes that likely caused hundreds of deaths the last time you stood against this. However, this time you’re confronting them with an entirely new set of skills and weapons, with some new boons and abilities available from returning characters to help balance each encounter to suit its new heroine slightly.
Letting you explore these areas again would be one thing, but the mod also elegantly weaves Melinoe into the story. Although characters still talk to Zagreus, the conceit here is that he’s simply along for the ride, with Melinoe the one getting her hands dirty in-between. Seeing her present during conversations certainly helps ground her in a story that was previously written without her in mind, which is a nice touch.
On top of that, there are additional cosmetics to purchase for the Crossroads, numerous new prophecies added to the Fated List, new incantations that make use of new resources found in the returning biomes, a whole new roster of testaments for the additional bosses, and much more. It’s a remarkable amount of content that has even garnered praise from Supergiant Games, with the developer sharing the mod’s 1.0 trailer.
We’re blown away by this user-created mod for the PC version of Hades II, which lets you play through the original game’s encounters as Melinoë!!🤯
