Diablo 4 Players Think the Game is Suffering From a Memory Leak Problem

Diablo 4 Players Think the Game is Suffering From a Memory Leak Problem

Some fans claim they are experiencing severe memory leak issues with Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred on PC, leading to crashes, freezes, and other performance problems. These are not the first technical problems Diablo 4 has had, but they appear to have worsened with the release of Lord of Hatred.

On April 28, 2026, Diablo 4 released the Lord of Hatred expansion to critical acclaim, with gamers praising its story, gameplay improvements, and endgame loop. The expansion is not without its issues, but it has largely been a success – so much so that Diablo 4 has beaten its previous player count records on Steam as of the Lord of Hatred release.

One Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred endgame feature has come under scrutiny from fans who want to see it balanced in a future update.

Does Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred Have a Memory Leak?

Some fans have come forth with claims of a major issue that has impacted their experiences with Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. According to many players, including Asmallman on Reddit, Diablo 4 has been having some major memory leak problems on PC since the expansion’s release. Asmallman provided a detailed description of their problems with Diablo 4, comparing it to Star Citizen, which they claim is a notoriously unoptimized game. They believe the core of the issue lies in Diablo 4 gradually using more RAM the longer it is open, eventually leading to stuttering, freezing, and crashes. Asmallman has tried reinstalling the game with and without high-definition textures, exchanging their RAM, and many other solutions to no avail. Their conclusion is that Diablo 4 seems to be hard-coded to limit the game’s RAM usage to no more than half of the system’s memory any given time.

With over 500 comments on their Reddit post in less than 24 hours, it is clear that these problems are a hot topic, and with over 1,500 upvotes, Asmallman is not the only one who has experienced them. Other fans shared their own issues, many of which corroborated Asmallman’s findings. The consensus among these gamers is that the game begins to experience severe performance issues after a few hours of play. While resetting the game resolves them, the regular disruption of Diablo 4 play sessions is frustrating, especially for a AAA game.

Many of the affected users turned their grievances against Blizzard, claiming that the company should have fixed these issues by now. That said, several gamers identifying themselves as programmers in the comments claimed memory leak issues are deceptively hard to fix, especially with so many varied hardware configurations and usage scenarios. What’s more, these issues are not necessarily new; fans have reported similar problems on and off over the course of the three years since Diablo 4’s release, meaning it is probably exceptionally hard to fix.

Regardless, it is clear Diablo 4’s optimization on PC is far from perfect. If the abundance of fans experiencing memory leaks was not enough, its exceptionally large file size – 88.5 GB for the game and both of its expansions, plus another 83 GB for optional high-resolution assets – is evidence that it could be better optimized. Hopefully, Blizzard can fix these Diablo 4 performance issues once and for all so that players can combat the forces of Hatred without needing to reset their game every few hours.
