With Grand Theft Auto 6‘s release approaching, fans and analysts are wondering whether it can finally break Minecraft‘s seemingly insurmountable sales record. Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies in its lifetime, making it the best-selling game of all time, a title it shares with Tetris. And the closest any game has come to those two giants is Grand Theft Auto 6‘s predecessor, which was released in 2013.
In 2020 alone, nearly seven years after its initial release, GTA 5 sold 20 million copies, a figure most other AAA games could only dream of reaching. According to Statista’s latest estimates, GTA 5 has now surpassed 215 million copies sold over the past 13 years, and it continues to move hundreds of thousands of copies each quarter. Still, it hasn’t been able to overtake Minecraft in the charts, as there is still a gap of nearly 100 million copies in the sales figures.
It’s Officially Time to Start Worrying About Grand Theft Auto 6’s Release Date
Grand Theft Auto 6 has now entered its final pre-release stretch where continued radio silence from Rockstar can still be viewed as normal.
The Looming Rivalry Between Rockstar Games and Mojang Studios
Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated video games of all time, is now viewed as Minecraft‘s next mighty competitor. If Rockstar Games wants to dethrone Mojang Studios’ hit and join Tetris as the best-selling game of all time, GTA 6 would likely need to sell more than 350 million copies. The competition between GTA 6 and Minecraft will not be entirely fair, either. Minecraft is available on nearly every major gaming platform, including PC, consoles, and mobile devices. GTA 6, meanwhile, is launching only on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and eventually PC, leaving out a large portion of players who own Nintendo Switch consoles or primarily play on mobile devices.

To put that into perspective, there are currently around 35 million Xbox Series X/S consoles and roughly 92 million PlayStation 5 users. Notably, the PC version of Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to launch sometime after the console releases, limiting the initial potential audience to about 127 million console players. But even with those disadvantages, a quick look at the world records of Rockstar Games’ previous installment is enough to see the enormous sales potential GTA 6 still has.
The fifth installment has set multiple Guinness World Records since its release, including for the best-selling video game and the highest revenue generated by an entertainment product within 24 hours. On the strength of that performance, experts expect GTA 6 to sell more than 25 million copies on its first day. And Statista estimates the game could generate more than $3 billion for publisher Take-Two Interactive by the end of its first year. If that forecast proves correct, it could be an early indication of the game’s potential to eventually challenge Minecraft‘s all-time sales record over its lifespan.
For now, most projections surrounding GTA 6‘s commercial performance remain speculative and should be treated with caution. What appears far more certain is that the title is expected to break multiple records and challenge some of the best-selling games of all time following its release on November 19, 2026. Even so, it may take years before the game reaches its full sales potential and it becomes clear whether it can genuinely compete with titles such as Minecraft and Tetris. The previous installment, after all, took nearly 13 years to reach its current sales figures.
