Space Haven is an indie sci-fi colony management game that first launched in Early Access on Steam in 2020. On May 13, Space Haven finally received its full 1.0 release, and it’s been earning rave reviews from Steam users.
While the game may have only recently left Early Access, it has been a cult favorite for years, with many considering it one of the best space-themed construction games available. “This game has been a true labor of love for us,” says Bugbyte, a small studio made up of three developers who have spent nearly a decade working on Space Haven.

As a spaceship management game, Space Haven puts players in the role of a space nomad equipped with a fragile ship and only a handful of resources. Early on, the focus is purely on survival, as players must deal with threats ranging from dangerous gases inspired by Oxygen Not Included to monstrous aliens, hostile ships, and space pirates. Once the crew grows large enough and the essentials are secured, players can begin building their own colony inside a spaceship or station using Space Haven‘s extensive customization options.
One of the aspects that makes Space Haven especially appealing to sandbox game fans is the freedom it offers when it comes to building and managing a unique spaceship. According to developer Bugbyte, every tile can be modified, and every item has a purpose. The crew management systems are also fairly detailed, allowing players to create daily schedules for each crew member and closely micromanage their routines.

Players can approach Space Haven in two different ways: exploring the endless galaxy or settling down to colonize a station. In the first option, players travel between stars across the game’s procedurally generated world, emphasizing survival mechanics while still allowing room for base-building and colony management. In the second, players remain in one location, build and expand an interstellar station, and focus more heavily on NPC interactions and crew management systems inspired by games like RimWorld.
