Subnautica 2 Won’t Let You Kill Fish, But These 5 Games Give You a Rocket Launcher

Subnautica 2 Won’t Let You Kill Fish, But These 5 Games Give You a Rocket Launcher

Subnautica 2‘s early access launch has gone well for the most part, and Unknown Worlds has already outlined a roadmap’s worth of improvements for the immediate future. However, one thing that seems unlikely to be added to the game is the ability to kill wildlife (aka fish), a decision that hasn’t gone over that well with everyone.

You can see where the team is coming from, as Subnautica 2 is not seeking to be a combat-driven survival game. Conversely, the frustration coming from players is also understandable, as there is nothing more annoying than having to watch helplessly as your attempts to build a base are thwarted by fish that are bigger than the size of a human. Considering you can use fish as sustenance, aka food, the inability to fight back in these situations can be immersion-breaking. To be fair, Unknown Worlds is considering expanding the deterrent tool available to players, which could be a good middle ground.

Unless things change, you will not be able to kill these creatures or other fish like Leviathans in Subnautica 2; however, not every survival game cares about preserving a planet’s natural ecosystem. Time to pick up a rocket launcher and kill some dinosaurs.

Ark: Survival Evolved (Or Ascended)

Dinos Aren’t Going To Ascend Themselves

You cannot cause the extinction of any dinosaur species in Ark: Survival Evolved or Ascended, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have the necessary tools to (temporarily) demolish a population. Like most good survival games, Ark initially strips players of all resources, leaving them naked, stranded, and ill-prepared to deal with The Island’s many predators. However, like most survival games, players eventually reach a point where they are the alpha predator on the planet, becoming so incredibly well armed that they can not only RPG a Rex into oblivion, but also tame it and turn it into a mecha. Just like evolution prophesied.

Subnautica 2: How to Deal with Hostile Creatures

Can you permanently deal with predators in Subnautica 2? Find the answer below.

While Subnautica 2 wisely limits creature attacks to just the building process, Ark players must defend their complete bases from dinosaurs unless they pick a location that works as a haven, and pacifism will not get them far. You aren’t a guest on this world, but rather an inhabitant who is looking to survive, thrive, and maybe even dominate. Sure, you might decide to coexist with some of these creatures, but that’s your decision and not theirs.

Deep Rock Galactic

Stripping A Planet For Parts

Now, here is a game that is entirely about exploiting an alien planet. As space-dwarves, Deep Rock Galactic sends players on missions to mine Hoxxes IV’s material deposits and then make a quick escape. Along the way, they will probably need to kill a few hundred Gylphiid wildlife, which is the cost of doing business.

While not exactly in great shape, the planet can sustain forms of life; it just isn’t safe for humanoids. All four classes in Deep Rock Galactic start with pretty solid weapons and equipment, and their arsenal just gets more destructive as they level up and earn cash. The Gunner dwarf even gets a rocket launcher-style gun called the Hurricane, but it isn’t even really among the strongest weapons in the game.

Palworld

Turning Wildlife Into Weapons

“Pokemon with guns” is more than stellar marketing, and Palworld mostly delivers on that promise. While you cannot just hand any ordinary weapon to a Pal, a few of them have gun-based skills or, in the case of the Jetragon, aerial missiles. Palworld somehow manages to mix the cute with the obscene in a way that the latter doesn’t take away from the former, despite the game encouraging players to treat these creatures as weapons or laborers who will work endlessly for room and board. You can even butcher Pals to restock their loot drops or even just to make space.

Palworld: Every Dungeon, Ranked

There is a wide range of different dungeons that players can explore for resources and Pals in Palworld. Here is every dungeon in Palworld, ranked!

If that wasn’t enough, certain Pals are equipped to run the Weapons Assembly Line, creating the next batch of advanced weapons and ammo that can then be used to wipe out more of this world’s inhabitants. Also, you can eventually unlock a Rocket Launcher, either once you reach level 49 or by having Pals assemble it.

Far Cry 4

Kill Them Before They Kill You

While always on Earth, Far Cry games are specifically set in exotic locales (and Montana), with the protagonist being an outsider who is interfering with the area’s status quo. I went with Far Cry 4 simply because Kyrat is out-of-this-world gorgeous, but all the entries qualify to an extent.

Along with killing roughly a billion mercenaries, Far Cry players also have to contend with the wildlife, which seems to have an “attack on sight” mentality. Be it Bengal tigers or just a plain-old honey badger, animals will wreck your day instantly if you try to be gentle. Rather than forcing players into a submissive role, Far Cry 4 lets them take on predators head-on, and there really isn’t all that much a wolf can do when it is staring down the barrel of a rocket launcher.

Both Subnautica 2 and Far Cry 4‘s wildlife can be really annoying at times, but only one of them lets you defend yourself.

Subnautica

Planet 4546B’s Fish Weren’t So Lucky

Yeah, that’s right, you can kill Leviathans in the first two Subnautica games, although it takes some perseverance and a bit of luck. You aren’t really meant to do that, as your “weapons” are not designed to be lethal, and Leviathans have incredibly high HP to discourage most people from even trying to kill them. The thing is, if the possibility exists, players will find a way to do it. That is likely why Unknown Worlds opted to make certain fish completely unkillable in Subnautica 2; on the other hand, this is also why so many people are annoyed by this change, since the previous games handled it fairly well.
