Frontier Legends, an upcoming Western title that looks as though it could be an honorary Red Dead title, is coming to Steam Early Access on May 29. The game, which comes from indie developer Neojac Entertainment, will be the perfect alternative for Red Dead fans on Steam looking to fill the void while they wait for another game in Rockstar’s Western series.
Rockstar’s Red Dead series has essentially set the standard by which all other Western games will be judged, especially those that tackle an open world. However, because Rockstar titles arrive so infrequently (it has already been eight years since its last Western), many look for games like Red Dead Redemption 2 to replicate the experience as closely as possible.
Frontier Legends Has Serious Red Dead Vibes
Developer Neojac Entertainment has confirmed that its Western open-world adventure game Frontier Legends will enter Early Access on May 29. According to the studio, players “arrive as a new settler on the frontier,” where they are left to fend for themselves as they get to grips with the brutal world of the Wild West. Over time, players are able to build their own frontier towns, fight off bandits and outlaws, forge alliances with locals, and live out their Western fantasies any way they’d like. It even boasts online co-op, allowing players to tackle the West together.

Aesthetically, the comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2 are obvious, but any Western nowadays will always face this. Even if Neojac Entertainment doesn’t have the development resources of Rockstar, it’s clear that a lot of care has gone into creating this game world, and what has been shown so far looks like a faithful version of the old West that many players will love to get lost in.
The developer says that Frontier Legends is planning to be in Early Access “for the better part of this year,” but this also “will depend on what feedback we get and how much needs to be changed.” It also says that while there is a wide range of features coming in the Early Access release on May 29, there will be tons more to come, including additional combat abilities, more maps, and mod functionality. It’s aiming to make the best use of the Early Access period, consulting with its community to define the roadmap going forward.

Given that it doesn’t look like Red Dead Redemption 3 is on the way any time soon, there’s certainly an opportunity for another open-world Western to fill the gap in the market. Whether Frontier Legends is that title remains to be seen, but with an Early Access release date officially locked in for May 29, gamers don’t have to wait long to find out what the game is all about.
