007 First Light Producer Addresses Pressure of Following GoldenEye’s Legacy

007 First Light Producer Addresses Pressure of Following GoldenEye’s Legacy

There is a long list of James Bond adaptations out there, and 007 First Light is next in line to tell a new chapter in the beloved spy’s life. This time around, 007 First Light seeks to show a different side of Bond. Instead of a highly skilled and veteran MI6 agent, this version of the character is a rookie who is working his way up in the ranks to finally secure that coveted 00 status. Ian Fleming’s iconic character has been around for 73 years now, and there have been plenty of unique iterations in those seven decades.

Between the novels, film series, and TV spin-offs, there is a ton of Bond content out in the world. Bond and his antics may be most well-known through the films and books he is featured in, but the character has also starred in plenty of video game adaptations. The James Bond games haven’t always been the best way to experience the franchise, but GoldenEye remains the quintessential Bond game for longtime fans and gamers. The game is nearly 30 years old now, and another James Bond game has yet to boast the same reputation that it does. Trying to escape from the shadow of GoldenEye can’t be easy, and 007 First Light Licensing Producer Theuns Smit recently had a chat with GameRant about how developer IO Interactive approached setting this new game apart from such a popular classic.

007 First Light Dev on Comparisons: ‘We Can’t Simply Reskin a Hitman Game and Call It Bond’

IO Interactive comments on the speculation over whether 007 First Light, the studio’s next release, is just a reskin of its past Hitman games.

007 First Light Uses Its Unique Identity to Make a Game That’s Very Different From GoldenEye

It’s not that GoldenEye is actually the best James Bond game. That’s deeply subjective. However, GoldenEye is the most influential James Bond game, even three decades later. GoldenEye was revolutionary at the time, because its Nintendo 64 launch made FPS games on console a far more mainstream experience. Yes, some FPS titles existed on consoles before then, but GoldenEye is largely seen as a major step forward for this genre finding a larger audience. Even today, GoldenEye is seen as one of the best FPS games of all time because of its impact on the industry.

GoldenEye was also deeply influential when it came to fun split-screen co-op. It brought the FPS genre to the next level, and it has been really difficult for other James Bond games to meet those same expectations. 007 First Light looks like it actually has a fighting chance to be the next great Bond game, though. Bringing a new version of James Bond to life is hard enough, but IO Interactive is aiming for a blend that makes the story feel fresh while also honoring the franchise’s legacy. Since 007 First Light is a game adaptation, it’s nearly impossible to not think of GoldenEye and potentially use it as inspiration. When asked about if GoldenEye influenced developers, Theuns Smit had this to say:

I think all throughout, giving nods to the films, to the books, to the games, it’s pretty tied up in the DNA. And there’s definitely a lot of awe and nostalgia around GoldenEye, for sure, but we set out not to recreate any of those. They’re great as they are, but we’re here to bring our own take on this, to bring our own story, our own action adventure, our own gameplay experience.

Smit’s emphasis on IO Interactive avoiding being influenced by GoldenEye is completely in line with what 007 First Light‘s features have promised so far. This new game takes a more cinematic third-person approach and is far more flexible when it comes to gameplay. Because this is an IO Interactive game, 007 First Light boasts a system that allows an impressive amount of player freedom in order to complete missions.

007 First Light Could Be the Definitive James Bond Game, But It’s Not Exclusive to Just Longtime Fans

The game’s fresh take on James Bond is exciting enough, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things that make 007 First Light so intriguing. IO Interactive is hoping to showcase all the aspects that make a James Bond story so entertaining. 007 First Light‘s story is deeply rooted in the franchise’s legacy, which is bound to be exciting for die-hard fans who really want to feel like they’re walking in James Bond’s shoes. Smit had this to say about how 007 First Light aims to be a deeply immersive Bond experience:

We really see this as quite a bit of a 360 offering, dare I say, maybe almost the most immersive version of a James Bond game, because we’re really aiming for a game that has it all. There are the gadgets, there’s the gunplay, there are the vehicles, there are the exotic locations, there are the characters, there’s MI6, there’s Q Lab, there’s all these places that, if you’re a Bond fan, you’re going to be giddy, you’re going to be quite happy going through this.

Passionate Bond fans aren’t the only ones who will get something out of 007 First Light, though. IO Interactive also wants the game to be just as fun for gamers who aren’t really familiar with the franchise’s lore. Whether it’s James Bond as a character, the action-packed adventure, or 007 First Light‘s villain, everything is meant to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers who are in the market for a brand-new game that’s incredibly fun to play. Smit expanded on this by saying:

On the other hand, it’s not just for Bond fans because, if you’re somebody who, for example, doesn’t have that much of a great attachment to it or doesn’t know much about it, at its core, this is a third-person story-driven action adventure game. So, there’s that action adventure that, for many people, might be their first introduction to the world of Bond, and that’s exciting in and of itself as well. There’s definitely this opportunity that crosses multiple generations, as Bond always has, to bring this experience into your hands, and that’s just so special.

After seven decades of being part of pop culture, it’s interesting to think that 007 First Light could be many players’ first introduction to James Bond and the wild espionage-filled world he lives in. 007 First Light is more than just a new James Bond game. It’s a blank slate for a character that has helped define the spy genre.

007 First Light’s Rookie Bond Could Have a Big Impact

It’s hard to say if 007 First Light will be as influential as GoldenEye was. That’s unlikely, but it at least could be a huge turning point for its franchise as a whole. There have been questions about who will star in the next James Bond movie, but 007 First Light may actually be deserving of the main spotlight. Bond has kept a solid presence in both film and gaming, but the latter is now just as strong at storytelling. Gaming also has the major benefit of allowing players to actually step into these beloved characters’ lives. James Bond may have been a Hollywood staple for decades now, but the series could be evolving in a way that allows it to be stronger as a game franchise.

Right now, IO Interactive hasn’t revealed any plans to make 007 First Light a larger series. It’s definitely too early to say whether that’s feasible or not. However, it’s not off the table quite yet. The 007 First Light cast already has it feeling like a major blockbuster, so it will be fascinating to see if the game truly feels like living the ultimate James Bond experience. Thankfully, the wait to find out is almost over, as 007 First Light is set to officially launch later this month.
