New Co-Op Soulslike Game Launches to 90% Very Positive Reviews

New Co-Op Soulslike Game Launches to 90% Very Positive Reviews

With Elden Ring Nightreign support seemingly wrapped up, players may be looking for their next co-op soulslike, and Steam has them covered. A new co-op soulslike named Serpent’s Gaze has just launched on the platform, and Steam users have been showering it in positive reviews.

For those unfamiliar with Serpent’s Gaze, the game offers many of the soulslike staples: brutal enemy encounters and even more challenging boss battles, mysterious lore to piece together, and a memorable world to explore solo or alongside friends. It does, however, have some unique mechanics. Not only is the Egyptian setting distinct from the FromSoft Soulsborne catalog, but the game offers a roguelike upgrade system as well as a “curse” system, the latter of which shakes up each run with a negative status effect. Sometimes that comes in the form of a boss that stalks the player, while other times it’s an added environmental hazard.

Per the Serpent’s Gaze Steam page, the game not only offers controller support, but controllers are even the recommended way of playing it.

Steam Makes Popular 6-Player Co-Op Game Free Until June 1

A free Steam game promotion gives players a limited time to check out a 6-player co-op RPG with a Mostly Positive review rating after 90K players.

Serpent’s Gaze is a Hit With Soulslike Fans

It seems like fans of the soulslike genre are impressed by what Serpent’s Gaze has to offer, at least in this early iteration. It’s worth noting that Serpent’s Gaze has launched in early access — its low $15 base price tag reflects that, as does its current lack of polish, with some janky animations and bugs still needing to be ironed out. However, there are numerous pros listed by users who have bought into the Serpent’s Gaze hype, with contributors to its 90% citing its original art, difficulty, and build variety as key strengths.

One Steam reviewer even compares Serpent’s Gaze to Elden Ring Nightreign, only without the stress, which makes sense. Players don’t need to worry about a looming, battle royale-like storm that gets in the way of their runs, but they’re still coming up with diverse builds on each attempt and are able to play with up to 3 other friends. For players who loved the idea of Elden Ring Nightreign, but had issues with the execution, this still-in-development soulslike game could absolutely be worth picking up.

Of Serpent’s Gaze’s 192 reviews at the time of writing, roughly 172 are enjoying the game, which suggests that it’s very likely to hit fora Dark Souls fns seeking out an alternative. The reviews suggest the Souls vibe is very much there despite the roguelike elements, with dodge rolling said to feel extremely satisfying, as the mechanic utilizes the all-important I-frames that elevate the feature. Co-op is also seamless, which is a huge help; if players are mid-run and doing well, but their friend is online and ready to play, they can just hop right into an existing session.

Given Serpent’s Gaze’s position as a Steam early access title, players can eventually expect a new faction to be added, which means a range of additional enemies and bosses. The price will “slightly” increase upon full release, so those who are already on board should consider picking up the game now for a discount.
