God of War Laufey’s Boss Fights Have Seriously Endless Potential, But It’s Not the New Ones That Are Most Exciting

God of War Laufey has been one of the biggest announcements of the year so far, and the 20 minutes that Santa Monica Studio revealed at the Sony State of Play showcase has raised a lot of big questions. This time around, God of War Laufey is going to follow Faye right after her death as she ventures into a strange new world called the Everywhen. The Everywhen is a massive afterlife for gods and other powerful beings, and it’s already confirmed to be introducing a few exciting new pantheons.

The new God of War Laufey gods that have been confirmed so far are Sekhmet and Begtse. Sekhmet is an Egyptian goddess of war, pestilence, and chaos, while Begtse is a Mongolian war god. These characters tease that there are likely going to be more gods from these two pantheons introduced throughout the story, but that isn’t the most exciting thing about God of War Laufey. New mythologies are great, but the chance to see gods from past God of War games might turn out to be just as cool.

God of War Laufey, Explained: Who Is Faye?

God of War Laufey is set to follow Kratos’ second wife, Faye, and her journey in the Everywhen. Here’s what you need to know about her character.

God of War Laufey Has Plenty of Room to Bring Both New and Old Gods Together

Sekhmet and Begtse are downright intimidating when they first appear in the God of War Laufey gameplay footage. Begtse’s massive size and brute force and Sekhmet’s chillingly calm demeanor are fascinating contrasts, and it’s going to be incredibly intriguing to see if any other beings from the Egyptian and Mongolian pantheons make an appearance.

However, there is also a massive graveyard of gods that Kratos has created for God of War Laufey to dig up and put back into the spotlight. When looking at God of War‘s Norse saga, there are already a few characters that could make a surprise second appearance in Faye’s story. Baldur, Magni, and Modi all met their ends at the hands of Kratos in the first Norse chapter. It would only make sense for Faye to run into them at some point during the game.

There’s also the question of God of War Laufey‘s timeline to take into consideration. It’s clear that the game starts off at the same point that God of War (2018) does, but Santa Monica Studio has yet to reveal whether the game’s story will stretch across both the first chapter and Ragnarok. Time might work quite differently in the Everywhen, and that would make it possible for the game’s story to run parallel with both God of War and Ragnarok. If that’s the case, then Heimdall, Thor, and Odin could easily be thrown into the mix.

Faye vs. Thor Part 2

The Norse saga has mentioned Faye’s fight against Thor, and it would be pretty cool to actually get to experience it firsthand. Faye used the Leviathan Axe to give Thor one of the hardest fights of his life. She may not have the axe this time around, but the mysterious sword that she equips in the gameplay footage has the potential to be just as powerful or even stronger. There have even been leaks and theories suggesting that the sword is Merlin or Excalibur. Throwing Arthurian legends into the mix would be a wild twist, but it would also be an awesome way to potentially make Faye even stronger than she was in her past life.

The Everywhen Could Be the Key to Bringing Back the Greek Pantheon

Bringing back God of War‘s Greek pantheon in God of War Laufey feels inevitable, but there’s not really any way to know for sure right now. Kratos has a sea of blood on his hands when it comes to the Greek gods. His guilt for causing such destruction in his home world has been one of his defining traits throughout the Norse saga, and it would be really compelling to see the pantheon through Faye’s eyes this time around.

Even though she’s never faced these gods, she has a unique personal connection to them. Faye is responsible for helping Kratos deal with his rage and guilt, and putting her in a situation where she has to face the very gods that her husband killed when he was a very different person would be fascinating to watch unfold. Santa Monica Studio’s State of Play reveal confirmed many of the God of War Laufey leaks that had been circulating the internet prior, but some have yet to be proven right or wrong. One of the leaks claims that Mesoamerican gods are supposed to play a role. If this is true and God of War Laufey has Mongolian, Egyptian, and Mesoamerican gods, then it would be surprising and a little disappointing to leave out the Greek pantheon.

God of War Laufey Might Be Really Particular About Which Gods It Includes

There are still more questions than answers when it comes to this new God of War game, but one thing that was made clear is that Begtse and Sekhmet are gods of war. It’s very possible that the “God of War” game title might be used to talk about all gods of war instead of just Kratos. This would help Santa Monica Studio narrow down which gods to give the spotlight to; there are so many ancient pantheons out there, and it would quickly get overwhelming trying to pick and choose which gods to add into the story. Because of this, only featuring a god of war specifically from each pantheon would make a lot of sense.

God of War Laufey doesn’t have an official release date yet, but leaks have claimed 2027. All leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, though.

When it comes to the Greek pantheon, this would leave Ares as the god most likely to be part of the God of War Laufey cast of characters. Even if it isn’t every god Kratos has killed, Ares would be an awesome boss fight. Ares was the one who tricked Kratos into killing his first wife and daughter. He’s the god who kickstarted Kratos’ journey, and seeing Faye take down the one who was responsible for sending her husband down such a dark road would be some great closure. Right now, all there is to do is speculate. It may be a while before Santa Monica Studio reveals more, but there will hopefully be another teaser during this year’s Game Awards.
