Warframe Developers Express Their Heartbreak Over The End Of Destiny 2

Warframe Developers Express Their Heartbreak Over The End Of Destiny 2

While the death of online games can often met with ugly crowing from those who perceive their gaming choices to be tribal commitments, that’s rarely if never the case from those working in the same industry. That’s demonstrated by the reaction from the team behind Warframe over the sad news of Destiny 2‘s demise. As Eurogamer reports, members of Digital Extremes have expressed their sadness and distress over the end of Bungie’s epic franchise.

“It’s heartbreaking. It’s earth-shattering,” Warframe‘s community director Megan Everett told EG when the site spoke to the studio about its reaction to the shock news that Destiny 2 will no longer be receiving updates. “I never thought I’d ever see the day where I’d read an article from Bungie about Destiny 2 essentially shutting down,” Everett continued. “No one is celebrating the fact that this has happened to Destiny, and its players and that story.” Recognizing that people have described Bungie’s live-service game and Warframe as “direct competitors,” Everett argues that competition is healthy.

Eurogamer also points out that soon after the news broke on May 20, Digital Extremes creative director Rebecca Ford posted to X talked about the enormously important part Bungie games had played in her life, adding “There is no Warframe without the legacy of Bungie games.” She called Destiny “a force of nature, loved and held in the hands of so many people who, for a moment, were part of the biggest thing in gaming,” and described the game as “the only lasting pillar I had to look up to.”

At the age of 16, me and my best friend (who gave me the name ‘rebulast’), picked up our midnight release editions of Halo 3, sped home, told our parents it was important, and played more Halo than you could imagine.

There is no Warframe without the legacy of Bungie games.

The “rising tides float all boats” truism is, well, so often true, and that’s very often the case in video games too, but it’s too often not accepted by contingents among the players of games. Fans have rallied behind Destiny 2 since the announcement, although clearly too late, and conspiratorial views regarding Marathon have led to ridiculous Steam review bombing nonsense. Perceived loyalties become threatened, purity is tested among cliques, and it all results in misguided lashing out. But as Warframe‘s Everett told Eurogamer, “I’ve said for forever, I never expect anyone to only play Warframe. You would burn out so fast if you did. So having other games that scratch a similar itch is healthy for our genre. Having Destiny was healthy for us.”
