The Last Days of the Third Age is a Must-Play Steam Game Before the Open-World Lord of the Rings Game

The Last Days of the Third Age is a Must-Play Steam Game Before the Open-World Lord of the Rings Game

Lord of the Rings games come and go, but some of the best Middle-earth experiences aren’t official releases at all. The Last Days of the Third Age is a total conversion mod for Mount & Blade: Warband (and the original Mount & Blade) that turns TaleWorlds’ medieval sandbox into a full-blown Lord of the Rings game. While plenty of mods add a few themed weapons or armor sets, The Last Days goes much further, rebuilding the game around Tolkien’s world and the War of the Ring.

Of course, there are other, official LotR games out there to play, but this mod could have been easily missed by any number of PC gamers. And it feels especially relevant right now, just because it’s such an immersive experience before one happens in the coming years. Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios confirmed it was working on an open-world Lord of the Rings game earlier this year, after weeks of rumors. It’ll probably happen after the next Kingdom Come game (releasing between April 2027 and March 2028), and details are kept closely under wraps for now. Until details emerge, The Last Days remains one of the best representations of The Third Age.

10 New Upcoming Medieval Games

Fans of medieval video games have a lot to look forward to in the near future, but these are the most promising titles on the horizon.

Last Days of the Third Age is an Immersive LotR Experience

  • Check it out on Steam Workshop
  • Requires Mount & Blade/Mount & Blade: Warband

In this mod, players aren’t Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, or any of the other major Lord of the Rings characters. Players instead step into the shoes of another soldier fighting the war as it unfolds across Middle-earth. Players can join the forces of good or evil and enlist with factions like Gondor, Rohan, Rivendell, Mordor, Isengard, Harad, and more, giving players ground-level immersion as opposed to the core/direct stories seen in other games.

The Last Days also changes much of what players might expect from Mount & Blade. There’s a slight tonal shift, players earn influence within their faction, and actively push their side toward victory. Factions each have different troops, equipment, strengths, and weaknesses, while Tolkien’s setting makes every fight a little different. Custom armor, weapons, character models, troop trees, and environments also help sell the fantasy. While Mount & Blade: Warband was released back in 2010, The Last Days often feels more like a dedicated Lord of the Rings game built inside Warband than a traditional mod (which is probably why it has remained so popular for so long).

That popularity hasn’t faded much over the years, either. The Last Days remains one of the most recognizable Mount & Blade: Warband mods and continues to attract new players through Steam Workshop. Community discussions regularly praise the mod’s dedication to Tolkien’s world and how naturally Mount & Blade‘s large-scale battles fit the War of the Ring. After all, charging into battle alongside hundreds of soldiers from Gondor or Mordor is exactly the kind of experience many LotR fans have wanted for years.

For players willing to overlook Warband‘s age, The Last Days of the Third Age is, or should be, a key part of any LoTR game catalog. In short, it combines one of gaming’s best medieval sandbox experiences with one of fantasy’s most beloved settings, creating something that still stands out more than a decade later.
