Bungie Studio Head Stepping Down After Recent Layoffs

Bungie‘s studio head, Justin Truman, is reportedly stepping down from his role at the studio alongside the mass layoffs that have been initiated today. The day many fans had been worried about has arrived as Sony announced mass layoffs at Bungie, resulting in significant turnover as the company now turns its sights on Marathon.

It’s been a rough couple of months for Bungie and its fans, as the studio confirmed that Destiny 2 would be getting its final content update, which in turn was the Monument of Triumph patch that arrived on June 9. As fans worked through different stages of emotions, many attempted to turn the tide by signing petitions, flooding messages of Destiny 3 during livestreams, as well as attempting to slam the Destiny 2 servers when the final update arrived. While the support for Destiny 2 surged once more, with tons of praise being sent to Bungie for what the studio was able to include within the last update, it ultimately wasn’t enough to turn things around.

Likely Final Major Destiny 2 Update Fixes Fan Favorite Boss Glitches

Bungie releases what is expected to be the final major patch for Destiny 2, which also fixes many fan favorite bosses glitches and cheese.

After all the speculation, reports, and attempts from fans, Bungie was hit with mass layoffs on June 25. Bungie admitted that Destiny 2 had failed to live up to expectations over the last several years, hinting at the decline in player population and many of the frustrating changes the game saw as it transitioned to its final year of content. The total number of employees being let go wasn’t announced, with Sony calling it a “significant number” that includes “most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members.” In fact, even some Sony employees that were supporting the studio were also let go.

As the reporting continues over the Bungie situation, Jason Schreier broke the news that Bungie’s studio head, Justin Truman, is also stepping down as well. In information comes from those familiar with the situation and without a successor named at the moment, it’s entirely possible that Sony will have an even bigger influence on the studio. Truman took over for Bungie’s Pete Parsons in 2025, after the latter announced his departure. While Parsons was a seemingly controversial figure for the community, he originally started at the studio in 2002, holding multiple positions before taking over as CEO in 2015. Truman has also been a longtime Bungie employee over the past 15+ years, from writing code to serving as the Chief Development Officer of Bungie for a time as well.

As for what’s next at Bungie, the studio now focuses its attention on Marathon and trying to continue to grow the game that Sony calls “an important part of our portfolio.” Just recently, Bungie announced some of the new content coming in the midseason update in July, with Marathon‘s first fully PvE mode finally launching. Vault Breaker changes the rules of the game, allowing players to explore the Cryo Archive using a special Sponsored Kit, though not being able to extract with any loot. Instead, Vault Breaker has its own unique progression systems and currency called Vault Data, which can be used to upgrade the Sponsored Kit and unlock special gear.

In terms of what these layoffs mean for the long term future of Bungie, it’s largely too early to tell. Bungie’s note to fans does indicate that the changes were necessary to best position the studio going forward and that it does have future projects in early incubation. However, the message declined to go into details, indicating that it would share more about the future, but today wasn’t that day. With Bungie’s projects announced as being still early in the incubation process, it would seem that these games are still a very long ways off.
