PlayStation’s Comic-Con Plans Get Hit By Brutal Community Note

PlayStation’s Comic-Con Plans Get Hit By Brutal Community Note

Sony announces its attendance at San Diego Comic-Con, revealing the PlayStation games that will be in attendance at the show, though the community leaves a brutal community note on the post ensuring readers won’t forget what the company has planned. PlayStation fans remain irate at Sony’s recent decisions, with the community rallying against the company every chance it gets.

If Sony thought the anger would subside over time, it appears that won’t be the case. The PlayStation brand has inflamed its community with a number of decisions over the past few months, and the outrage appears to only be growing. Things really began back in May when it was revealed that Destiny 2 support was getting its final live service update, leaving fans new and old shocked by the game’s sudden and abrupt end. From there, Sony then doubled down on angering its community by announcing that it would be ending production on physical discs by 2028, changed its Terms of Service to automatically close accounts after 36 months, and laid off a sizable portion of Bungie.

Santa Monica Gives Official Update on God of War Laufey Release Date

After increased fan demand, developer Santa Monica Studio gives PlayStation gamers a little update on God of War Laufey’s release plans.

These decisions have led the community to lash out at PlayStation at any chance they get. In fact, the community has been adding notes to PlayStation Twitter posts, typically with brutal honesty about the company’s long-term plans. The latest comes on PlayStation’s Comic-Con plans, which involve upcoming games like Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War Laufey, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The three games are getting panels at San Diego Comic-Con as well as playable demos on the show floor, and while that typically would have been exciting news, the community remains deadset on getting Sony to reverse course on its all-digital future.

The San Diego Comic-Con post received another brutal Community Note on Twitter, adding a purchase warning for all to see. Specifically, the note provides a warning that Sony is not only pivoting to an all-digital future, but also highlighting recent activities made by the company, like CEO Hiroki Totoki selling over half his stock shortly after the physical disc news, and before it was updated, the note called it hints of “corporate instability.” The note also provides context with links to the news to provide sources for more reading. It’s worth noting that the addition is constantly being changed, with new context and details being added or updated often. However, one thing that isn’t changing are the replies to the post, which continue to call out Sony on its recent decisions as well.

The note also references the Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls controversy regarding PSN with a “poor digital ecosystems in pivotal markets” line. Similar to what happened with Helldivers 2 on PC, players discovered that Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls will also require a PSN account to function, meaning that it won’t be playable in 132 countries. Fans are hopeful that the backlash will again push Sony to reverse course just like it did with Helldivers 2, but as for now, the requirement stands.

At the time of publication, Sony had yet to respond or even hint that the backlash had caused it to rethink its plans. In fact, after Sony announced its plans to end physical disc production, the official PlayStation Twitter account seemingly went silent for nearly a week, clearly aware that the announcement wouldn’t be popular. However, Sony’s first Tweet after its prolonged silence wasn’t what the community was expecting, highlighting the upcoming wireless FlexStrike fight stick, seemingly pretending that nothing was wrong or had happened. With new petitions being made and fans continuing to hit back at Sony, it’ll be interesting to see if the company just progresses forward or if it addresses the community concerns head on at some point.
