7 Western RPGs That Are 10/10, No Notes

7 Western RPGs That Are 10/10, No Notes

Video games are a global industry that spans all sides of the globe. When it comes to RPGs, there is a lot of variety, from JRPG epics to Eurojank misfires, but whatever your tastes may be, it is pretty hard to deny how exceptional the West can be at making a great role-playing experience.

Near-Perfect Action RPGs That Are Certified Flops

These action RPGs were hailed as masterpieces but failed to capture the market, leaving fans wondering what could have been.

It is never easy to hit every nail on the head, yet when it happens, you will soon realize you are playing something truly special. We have been given several iconic franchises and so many wonderful adventures over the years, but only a few have managed to reach the same peaks as these 10/10 masterpieces.

Baldur’s Gate 3

The New RPG Standard

Details:

  • Cinematic gameplay and storytelling
  • Insane level of detail and freedom

Baldur’s Gate 3 blew away every expectation it had and brought with it arguably the most comprehensive CRPG experience to date. Starting out in a fantastical world with nothing but a few companions, you are promptly given the ropes to explore, converse, and fight in just about any way you could imagine, with virtually no limits at all.

The game captured the hearts of millions who would have never touched an RPG of this scale before, and I think a big reason for that is the lovable cast and the warmth of the world around them. Your party starts to feel like a family, and each NPC has a library’s worth of backstory to uncover, often meaning that even after beating the game, you will almost certainly want to have another go around.

The Bethesda Glory Days

Details:

  • So many opportunities to explore and branch from the main path
  • Endless replay value

Skyrim may be known for re-releases and a handful of timeless memes, but all jokes aside, it is hard to quantify just how impressive the game is. Bethesda really knows what makes a good open-world, and here, you are thrown into a gigantic landscape full to the brim with quests and hidden treasures that can take 100s of hours to fully absorb.

7 Open-World RPGs That Officially Last More Than 100 Hours

Immerse yourself in these massive open-world RPGs, each offering more than 100 hours of gameplay and endless possibilities therein.

Also, despite being over a decade old, it remains relevant today thanks to that insane amount of content and the diehard modding community that has kept the game going ever since its launch. After taking a long break and coming back to Tamriel, I am always surprised by the expansive nature of every component, and I find it hard to go five minutes without praising yet another part of the game.

Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

What A Star Wars RPG Is Supposed To Be

  • Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic (2)
  • Fighting enemies in Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic
  • Dantooine in Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

Details:

  • Incredible narrative arcs and twists
  • World-class storytelling

Kotor may be the last time we get to experience a perfect Star Wars RPG. Set thousands of years before the films, it tells an original story filled with memorable companions, meaningful player choice, and one of the most iconic narrative reveals in gaming history.

Looking at the mechanics, your opinions and ideas are placed front and center, with the morality system and the branching nature of the dialogue factoring in each and every decision from start to finish. I didn’t get to play it at launch, but now that I have taken a trip to the past, I would honestly consider the game to be a top three for me, even for non-Star Wars fans.

Mass Effect 2

Sci-Fi RPG Greatness

Details:

  • Every squadmate feels essential to the story
  • A generational finale

If there was one sci-fi RPG I had to play until the end of time, then there is no better choice than. Mass Effect 2. BioWare perfected their formula with your character development in the middle of the action, and the wider cast of characters becomes an integral component for every story beat, with individual arcs evolving alongside your choices.

The legendary final mission ties everything together brilliantly, connecting each decision into a single outcome, adding so much weight to all those prior dialogue options. There is not a single low point you can pick out across the entire game, and while I can understand why others may put other entries in the franchise before it, I would always have the second game at the top.

Disco Elysium

Mind Over Matter

Details:

  • Problems can be solved through dialogue and role-playing alone
  • Top-notch writing across the board

Disco Elysium completely reimagined what an RPG could be. Instead of emphasizing combat, it focuses almost entirely on conversations, investigations, and internal character development, and over time, different aspects of your personality become larger pieces in solving the grander puzzle.

RPGs 100 Hours Worth It To Play New Game Plus

Is It Actually Worth Replaying A 100-Hour RPG On New Game Plus?

A 100-hour RPG is a bit of an undertaking to get through, so is it even worth your time to jump in for a second NG+ run? Let’s find out.

Its writing is widely regarded as among the best produced for a video game, and despite being lower on the action end, I still felt a constant sense of urgency that was guided by the importance of every last conversation. A remarkable achievement that proves combat isn’t necessary to create a compelling RPG, and a landmark that I believe developers will look back upon fondly for years to come.

Pillars Of Eternity

Modernizing Classic CRPGs

  • Pillars of Eternity Endless Paths of Od Nua

Details:

  • Exceptional world-building
  • Deep tactical combat

Pillars of Eternity helped revive the classic isometric RPG formula for a modern audience. Obsidian, once again, showed its top-tier design skills by creating the richly detailed world of Eora, filling it with everything from complex politics to a fascinating history that we only get to glimpse on our journey across the lands.

The big standout comes from the real-time-with-pause combat, which offers you a tremendous amount of tactical depth, encouraging thoughtful party composition and strategic planning throughout the adventure. Combine it with excellent quest design and the classic Obsidian choice-first philosophy, and you end up with one of the finest traditional Western RPGs ever made.

Neverwinter Nights

It Just Keeps On Growing

Details:

  • Perfectly adapts the D&D experience
  • Player-made content driving the replay value

Neverwinter Nights was already an excellent adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons, but its greatest strength came from what players could create themselves. BioWare’s Aurora Toolset allowed the community to design entirely new campaigns, effectively transforming the game into a platform for endless role-playing adventures that is still being built upon today.

That extraordinary longevity is a major reason Neverwinter Nights remains so highly regarded, and a reason why I have managed to pull so many friends into playing a two-decade-old game. Even if you exclude the community, the official campaigns are still enjoyable enough and faithful to the original D&D mechanics for those seeking a more traditional role-playing quest.
