A Baldur’s Gate 3 modder has breathed new life into this three-year-old game by making it feel like an even older game: Dragon Age: Origins. First spotted by PC Gamer, the True Third Person Camera mod by Relysia adds a realistic, over-the-shoulder third person camera, putting the action right up in your face. According to the mod’s description, “the camera stays at a fixed distance to keep the close perspective,” adding even more immersion to the already detailed-as-shit game. Relysia has uploaded a short video demoing the mod so you can see it in action.
Relysia said that they’re pleased the mod has gotten so much attention, and they’ve released a second video that compares the game’s original camera with their mod so players can see the difference. (If you’re looking at the mod and wondering how it’s any different than playing BG3 with a controller, give that second video a look because the differences are quite stark.) Relysia also said that a more detailed breakdown of the mod is coming that’ll include how it works in combat.
It’s rare that a simple technical mod like this is enough to awaken the RPG demons that have lain dormant in me since, well, when Baldur’s Gate 3 first came out. I sank hundreds of hours into that game across several characters and eventually reached the point where I felt I had seen enough. But this mod is scratching at an itch I didn’t know I had, even though I’m not really looking for a hit from the Dragon Age nostalgia pipe. I enjoyed Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have mourned what EA has done to that team at BioWare, and am looking forward to what some of the remnants of that team are working on with The Concierge. I don’t need a mod that makes BG3 feel more like a Dragon Age game than it already does. But I guess I’m also looking to spend another 100 hours in a familiar place with familiar characters, and this mod offers a perspective that’s just novel enough to make the familiar feel fresh.
