In their attempt to add a split-screen mode from scratch, modders have discovered that Halo: Campaign Evolved already has split-screen functionality baked into its config files. The only thing preventing PC players from experiencing Halo: Campaign Evolved‘s split-screen mode is a simple mod that brings forward the code already sitting in the game’s files.
As any long-time Halo fan knows, local co-op has been an essential part of the franchise since its very beginnings. The original Halo trilogy, Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4 can all be played in local co-op, and many fans have very fond memories of playing through each entry in this fashion. So much so that when Halo 5: Guardians restricted its co-op mode to Xbox Live, many fans loudly expressed their disappointment. Though this disappointment was expressed tenfold when Halo Infinite shipped with no co-op mode at all. While Halo: Campaign Evolved has embraced the series’ local co-op roots on console, PC players can only play co-op via online play, at least in an official capacity.
Halo: Campaign Evolved Has Split-Screen on PC
Over on Nexus Mods, JPurd123 has just released a mod that brings local split-screen co-op to Halo: Campaign Evolved on PC. While this mod is great in and of itself, the really interesting element is what JPurd123 discovered when creating this mod. According to the modder’s notes, JPurd123 found that the PC build of Halo: Campaign Evolved never removed the console version’s split-screen functionality, and that the mode is technically already enabled in the config files. Additionally, the split-screen HUD layouts, sign-in UI, audio parameters, and VFX variants from the console’s local co-op mode are all there in the PC version’s files.

JPurd123 explains that their mod simply calls the code that’s already lying there dormant. The modder confirms that this is not a “re-implementation,” nor does it patch the game’s executable. Instead, it adds a second local player at runtime through UE4SS and removes the restrictions preventing the mode from working. To install this mod, players will need to first install UE4SS, download the mod from Nexus Mods, overwrite two files, and change Halo: Campaign Evolved‘s launch settings on Steam. The full installation instructions can be found on Nexus Mods.
GameRant Quiz
Before fans go rushing off to install this Halo: Campaign Evolved split-screen mod, however, there are some important notes to be aware of. JPurd123 states that the mod is based on the Steam version of Campaign Evolved, and that the Xbox app version of the game is untested and may not work due to different signature files not necessarily matching the mod’s executable. Pirated versions of Halo: Campaign Evolved will also not work with this split-screen mod due to unknown changes in any cracked files.
In theory, if split-screen functionality is already present in the PC version of Halo: Campaign Evolved, and it’s this easy to activate it from an external modder, then it would take no time at all for an official patch to restore the mode. At the time of writing, developer Halo Studios has not commented on the possibility of split-screen coming to Halo: Campaign Evolved on PC.
