Final Fantasy 14 players have discovered an unsettling area introduced in Patch 7.55 that looks like it belongs in the Backrooms rather than the colorful zones of the Dawntrail expansion. The Backrooms-inspired region can only be accessed by max-level Final Fantasy 14 players brave enough to seek it out.
Final Fantasy 14‘s Patch 7.55 went live on Tuesday, July 28, across all supported platforms. The 7.55 update focused solely on side content that max-level players can enjoy on their own time. This content included the final chapter of Hildibrand’s Dawntrail escapades, the capstone quest for Dawntrail‘s Allied Societies, and the Occult Crescent: North Horn field operation zone. Players who have completed the quest chain for the South Horn zone introduced in Patch 7.25 can venture to the North Horn and uncover secrets that link back to Final Fantasy 14‘s War of the Magi.

While Final Fantasy 14 is no stranger to implementing creepy regions within the game, such as The Palace of the Dead deep dungeon, the North Horn has one of its most unsettling areas to date. In short, Final Fantasy 14 players who venture too deep into the North Horn may find themselves in an area that looks like it was inspired by the Backrooms creepypasta. This area can be accessed by exploring the Unhallowed Hamlet, located in the middle of the map. On the south side of this void-corrupted hamlet is a house with stairs leading down a dark path.

Players who fight or evade the monsters patrolling this path will eventually see a hole in the wall that leads to the “Dark Territory” region. The Dark Territory is completely devoid of color and player character models will become desaturated upon entering it. Final Fantasy 14‘s official social media feeds made light of what players discovered shortly after Patch 7.55 was released. In short, the Backrooms creepypasta first appeared on 4chan in 2019 with an image of an empty yellow room with florescent lights. The phenomenon has since spun off into various games, such as Escape the Backrooms.
Despite the creepy nature of the Dark Territory, some players on the Final Fantasy 14 subreddit provided a plausible explanation behind its appearance. One fan stated that the Dark Territory’s lack of color and its unsettling nature may be a reference to Promyvion, a region from Final Fantasy 11. Promyvion is a dark region devoid of life, with a monochromatic atmosphere and spires that contain monstrous foes lurking throughout. Promyvion is a byproduct of the Emptiness, which is a dark, insidious phenomenon tied directly to the Twilight God Promathia, the namesake antagonist of FF11‘s Chains of Promathia expansion.
The Dark Territory is described in-game as a domain that was claimed by a powerful voidsent entity that suffers the corrupting influence of another realm, which lends credence to the notion of it being a callback to Final Fantasy 11 rather than the Backrooms. With Final Fantasy 14‘s Evercold expansion releasing in January 2027, it remains to be seen what regions players will discover.
