PSA: New Magic: The Gathering Set Boxes Could Cost Upwards of $1,000

PSA: New Magic: The Gathering Set Boxes Could Cost Upwards of ,000

A new Magic: The Gathering set will come out in November with amazing cards, but it’ll be extremely difficult to get, and boxes may end up costing $1,000. Currently, Magic: The Gathering fans are about to get the new Hobbit set on August 14, with pre-release events starting in just two days. After that, fans will be able to play and collect two more sets before the end of the year: the Reality Fracture set with Jace Beleren as a villain, and the Star Trek Universes Beyond set.

The 2027 release schedule for Magic: The Gathering looks packed with good sets so far. The in-multiverse part of the game will explore an underwater plane in Nauctis, return to Kamigawa with monster vs. mechs battles in Kamigawa Titanbreach, and take a deeper look at Zhalfir with a set of the same name. Still, despite interesting sets coming out in 2026 and 2027, one of the best releases of this year will be extremely hard to obtain for the vast majority of players. Not only that, but it may end up being scalped for hundreds of dollars, if not around $1,000.

This Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair Drop is Basically Early Christmas, But You Have to Act Fast

Magic: The Gathering has an upcoming Secret Lair drop that’s an early holiday season for fans who want to get a valuable card for less than its value.

Say Goodbye to Magic: The Gathering’s Mystery Booster Commander Edition

On November 9, 2026, Wizards of the Coast will launch a new MTG Mystery Booster set dedicated to Commander, with cards that are already great, but it will be a convention-only release. Fans have been asking for a dedicated Commander release for a while, and the new Mystery Booster Commander Edition is perfect for it, but it comes with a major catch. Players will only be able to get it at major Magic conventions, like the MagicCon in Atlanta from November 13 to November 15, then at SCG CONs, and future MagicCons. This leaves those looking for new cards for their Commander decks in MTG in the hands of third-party websites, as this set is not retail.

The Mystery Booster Commander Edition will be purchasable via Secret Lair through a Festival in a Box sale with an unannounced release date. These boxes typically sell for $250 and are subsequently scalped for $400 or more due to the very low volume available at Secret Lair, and the fact that the queues for MTG Secret Lair sales have issues and are incredibly long. Between the in-person requirement, the likely very low availability via Secret Lair, and the set containing multiple highly desirable cards for Commander, boxes may end up being sold online for astronomical amounts.

While a singles market for cards from the Mystery Booster Commander Edition will most likely be available, the set offers a unique opportunity for fans when buying boosters and boxes. Given that this is a Commander-themed release, players can do drafts where they build Commander decks from scratch with this product. However, since it’s going to be very limited in availability, only a very small percentage of the playerbase will actually be able to do this. Much like the dedicated draft product called MTG Draft Night became popular among fans, the Mystery Booster Commander Edition set could have achieved the same among Commander players, or even introduced potential players to the game and/or format.

Mystery Booster Commander Edition features cards with the Rulebreaker ability, which allows them to have particular rules instead of the usual ones when using them as commanders. An example is Whtz, the Bibliophile, which allows players to have no maximum deck size and has an ability that works with decks featuring 200+ cards. Then, Grizzlegom, Hurloon Hero allows players to use any land cards in a deck with it as a commander, and it gains different bonuses based on the types of land under the player’s control. Some of these cards may become the most popular commanders in MTG, or at least show up in many Commander decks, but they will be mostly unobtainable for the playerbase.
