Unique New Lovecraftian Stardew Valley Alternative Releases on September 10

Steam is packed with cozy games these days, but as with the increasing discoverability crisis affecting all indie games on PC, it’s becoming harder for new releases to get proper, deserved attention. Meanwhile, farming sims inspired by Stardew Valley are everywhere, and Lovecraftian horror is a whole different thing with its own gaming niches and challenges, despite pop culture’s love for cosmic monsters, unsettling mysteries, and psychological dread. It’s rare for a game to successfully combine both ideas, especially in a way that feels equally relaxing and unnerving, but that may not be the case for this new cozy game on Steam.

That’s exactly the lane Welcome to Elderfield is trying to carve out. Instead of treating Stardew Valley‘s farming and Lovecraftian horror as separate gameplay loops, it blends them together into one strange Steam life sim where planting crops, building relationships, and tending a farm all happen under the watchful eyes of eldritch gods. Now, players know exactly when they’ll be able to jump into it.

A new survival horror title on Steam merges The Division’s secret agent vibe with Fallout’s scavenging, all while adding dinosaurs to the mix.

Welcome to Elderfield officially launches on September 10, bringing its Lovecraftian take on the Stardew Valley formula to PC. The cozy horror RPG mixes farming, fishing, mining, foraging, romance, and home customization with hand-drawn horror manga-inspired visuals and a dark lo-fi soundtrack. Players can befriend (or marry) the town’s unusual residents while uncovering increasingly bizarre mysteries surrounding Elderfield, where the abnormal has become everyday life.

Of course, this isn’t a typical, colorful, happy-go-lucky farming sim. Crops include everything from corn and pumpkins to teeth and eyeballs, livestock is decidedly otherworldly, and wandering monsters can turn a peaceful day on the farm into a nightmare. If the recently-released farming sim Moonlight Peaks is more pastel goth, then this is capital g Goth with an emphasis on the subculture’s love for horror. Beyond its life sim mechanics, Welcome to Elderfield features simplistic turn-based combat against ancient Lovecraftian horrors, with resource management, equipment, and strategic buffs all playing a major role in defeating them.

Welcome to Elderfield also offers multiple difficulty options depending on how much horror players want mixed into their cozy experience, or to be more precise, how difficult they want the overall challenge in the game to be. Those looking for a more relaxed farming adventure can choose Cozy Mode, while anyone wanting a tougher challenge can embrace the Old Gods and dive into the game’s deeper combat and survival systems.

With its September 10 release date now locked in, Welcome to Elderfield is shaping up to be one of the more unique indie Steam game launches of the year. Although it seems safe to say the genre is spreading its wings. Another farming sim (Grave Seasons) is set to release this fall, and it adds a supernatural superkiller into the mix. So, it seems plenty of fans want darker takes on Stardew Valley, and games like Welcome to Elderfield are all seeking to deliver.
