A former Rockstar Games developer has claimed that it’s entirely possible that Grand Theft Auto 6 could face yet another delay. The detail comes over a month after pre-orders for GTA 6 opened, with the promise of a launch on November 19.
GTA 6 has been in the works for what might seem like ages to the average fan of the franchise. It’s been nearly 13 years since the release of GTA 5, and GTA 6 has faced multiple delays that have made that wait even worse. Rockstar Games opening pre-orders seemed like the development of the game was finally reaching the finishing line, but these new comments may worry fans.
Rockstar Games Dev Thinks GTA 6 Could Get Delayed By Another 6 Months
Former Rockstar Games developer Mike York says that given Rockstar Games’ history and his experience with the studio, it’s not out of the question for GTA 6 to get delayed again. In a conversation with Indy100 through Covers, York explained that in his experience with Rockstar, the company would be more than willing to move a release date if something wasn’t up to par with an upcoming game. He says that something as minor as a mission with bugs or anything else that isn’t up to the developer’s standard could lead to another delay, potentially pushing the game back as far as May 2027. While the developer doesn’t have inside information indicating that GTA 6 will be delayed, nor has there yet been any official indication that this will happen, the developer thinks it’s not out of the question, should Rockstar Games deem it necessary.

With GTA 6 having already made $1 billion in pre-orders in an hour, neither Rockstar Games nor parent company Take-Two Interactive would be happy to have to delay the game again. However, York has a point. Rockstar Games has previously released incredibly solid experiences, with surprisingly few major bugs for open world games. In the era of some of the earlier GTA games, fixing problems after the fact with downloaded patches wasn’t yet a thing, so the game had to be supremely polished before reaching the player. However, even in the age of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, the games arrived in good shape.
Rockstar Games and Take-Two are well aware of the expectations of the fanbase the series has cultivated over the years. The reputation of Rockstar Games is riding on the reception of GTA 6, so it needs to meet – or preferably, surpass – player expectations. It’s likely that tons of people will buy the game no matter how long it takes, so delivering a clean and well-performing experience is more important than pushing it out the door.
Another matter of concern in the playerbase is that Grand Theft Auto 6 still hasn’t released a third trailer. Fans assumed that one would arrive prior to the game becoming available for pre-order, but it’s still nowhere to be found. Clearly, based on the number of pre-orders already placed, Rockstar Games doesn’t really need to do anything at this point to promote the game, and could theoretically release GTA 6 on-time without a single piece of new marketing. However, releasing new footage, especially hands-on gameplay, would help to assuage remaining fan concerns that the game isn’t ready yet and could be delayed again. Thankfully, recent leaks have indicated GTA 6 will be shown off properly in August, so fans may soon find they had no reason to worry after all.
