No Man’s Sky Teases Next Major Update With 10th Anniversary Celebration

Originally released on August 9, 2016, No Man’s Sky is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and the sci-fi game’s next major update has just been teased. Officially titled ‘Cosmos’, the next No Man’s Sky major update is on the way, though it’s currently unclear when it’ll launch or what it’ll include.

Upon its debut in August 2016, No Man’s Sky was met with an infamously rough reception. Critics-wise, No Man’s Sky was widely viewed as a fair experience, but not one that was wholeheartedly recommended. On OpenCritic, the original iteration of No Man’s Sky has a Top Critic Average of 71 but a critic recommendation score of just 37%. In terms of general audiences, No Man’s Sky met a similar fate, with tens of thousands of day-one adopters reportedly requesting refunds in the game’s first few weeks on store shelves. Of course, No Man’s Sky has come an incredibly long way since this notoriously rocky launch, with developer Hello Games having now delivered 40 major updates that have turned the game into what many believe is one of the best sci-fi gaming experiences out there.

No Man’s Sky, 10 Years Later: From Disaster to Redemption

No Man’s Sky turns 10 today! From a botched launch to a beloved sci-fi hit, Hello Games pulled off one of gaming’s greatest redemption arcs.

No Man’s Sky Cosmos Update Teased

Hello Games Managing Director Sean Murray recently posted a short two-minute video to Twitter in celebration of No Man’s Sky‘s 10th anniversary. This video takes viewers through the entire 10-year history of No Man’s Sky, giving each of the game’s 40 major updates a moment to shine. Long-time fans of No Man’s Sky will recognize some key additions that have been made to the game over the years, such as exosuit gameplay, underwater mechanics, capital ships, and the game’s fully functional VR mode. Eagle-eyed viewers will even be able to spot a brief appearance of Mass Effect‘s Normandy SR1, which appeared in No Man’s Sky back in May 2021 as an obtainable Frigate.

After briefly showcasing each update released over the last decade, the official No Man’s Sky 10th anniversary celebration video ends with a tease of what’s coming in the near future. At the 1 minute 45 second mark, a new piece of No Man’s Sky key art is shown, and the title of the next major update is slowly teased letter by letter, eventually revealing the word ‘Cosmos.’ There’s currently no official details on what this update will bring to No Man’s Sky, nor when it could release. That said, No Man’s Sky‘s last major update, Swarm, launched back in May. If Cosmos follows a similar release pattern as No Man’s Sky‘s previous updates, then fans could see it release in the next few months.

Sean Murray Reflects on 10 Years of No Man’s Sky

Along with a 10th anniversary video, Hello Games’ Sean Murray also released an open letter addressed to fans. Viewable on No Man’s Sky‘s Steam Community page, this letter sees Murray reflecting on the last 10 years of his career, and the somewhat hectic journey that No Man’s Sky has been on. Murray states that “for any game to reach its ten-year milestone is impressive and I think that is especially true for No Man’s Sky,” and that the game’s success is due to the passion of the developers still working on it and those who have continued to play it.

Despite working on the same game for 10 years and having delivered 40 free major updates in that time, Murray says that the game’s “small team feels we have a lot left to explore in what No Man’s Sky can be.” Murray then addresses Hello Games’ next major project, Light No Fire, saying that the team is “busy cooking,” and teases “big things for the future of No Man’s Sky.”
