Marvel Tōkon Datamine Reveals Potential DLC Characters

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a week old now, and fans have already gone through the tag fighter’s files in search of any hint of the game’s upcoming DLC characters. Thus far, the only character developer Arc System Works has confirmed for the new anime fighter is Phoenix Cyclops, but he is only one of the four new heroes joining the roster in the first year. And as fans have started datamining Tōkon for further clues, they’ve found names of multiple heroes in the game’s files who aren’t currently on the roster. Though whether the names are exciting or disappointing depends on who you ask.

Dataminers have found mention of Doctor Strange, Wasp, Gambit, The Thing, Daredevil, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and Mr. Fantastic in Tōkon’s files, none of which are in the game’s roster at launch, nor have they been confirmed by Arc System Works. If these are the upcoming DLC characters, it looks like the entire Fantastic Four could be coming to the game in the future, which isn’t surprising considering their quartet formation is literally the basis for Tōkon’s 4v4 format, according to the story mode. Strange, Gambit, Wasp, and Daredevil seem to be much more random, but Tōkon does an okay job of pulling a lot of miscellaneous characters into the ring, and it’s cool to see several characters from different sides of the Marvel universe converging. What’s unclear at this point is if the new characters will make up one of the default “teams” in the actual storyline of Tōkon like the starting roster does, or if they’re just joining the game without much in the way of story integration.

Marvel has thousands of characters to draw from across the comics, so it’s gonna be impossible to please everyone hoping to see their favorite on the roster. Some feel like characters such as Doctor Strange are overused, while others might claim Wasp, being a lesser-known hero compared to her partner Ant-Man, is a wasted slot. I don’t know about that, though. Tōkon has a lot of Marvel mainstays and could use some of the lower-tier heroes so it doesn’t seem like it’s just playing the hits, especially if the Fantastic Four might be taking up four DLC slots in the future. Give us a couple of underutilized heroes to balance out the big names. For now, it’s unclear if these are all coming out in sequence or if we might not see some of these characters hit the game’s roster for years. As fans point out, Guilty Gear Strive had files referencing characters that didn’t launch until several seasons in, so Arc System Works may just be establishing the foundation for the long game.

Also in the files are references to what seem to be new stages, including Klyntar, Japan, and Sanctum Sanctorum which, if Doctor Strange is coming to the roster, seems like a lock.

Whatever the case, there’s bound to be someone disappointed that their favorite heroes haven’t made the roster yet. I’m kind of surprised that Thor isn’t mentioned in the files, as he is one of the Avengers mainstays, though he is notably absent during the events of the game’s story mode.
