Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Finally Getting Pokemon Home Compatibility

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Finally Getting Pokemon Home Compatibility

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players will soon have the chance to import Pokemon caught in the games over to Pokemon Home. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were originally released on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, and were ported over to Nintendo Switch in early 2025 as part of a celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The remakes take players back to the Kanto region, originally introduced in the Game Boy games from 1996.

Pokemon Home is a subscription service that allows players to move Pokemon between various games. Once the feature has been added to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, players will be able to use the Pokemon they’ve caught in those games in compatible titles like Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Pokemon Champions.

When Pokemon Home Compatibility Comes to Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

The Pokemon Company has officially announced that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen compatibility will be added to Pokemon Home starting in October. That timing seems to line up with recent leaks about Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald coming to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have not officially confirmed if those other Game Boy Advance games will be released on the system, but the timing would make sense.

Pokemon transfers from these GBA ports will be a one-time trip, as Pokemon moved from FireRed and LeafGreen cannot be sent back to those games. Players that have completed the Pokedex in FireRed and LeafGreen will receive a reward in the form of a Celebi. Unlike other Pokemon Home gifts, this will not require that players transfer over the Pokemon caught in those games. After Pokemon Home has been connected to FireRed and LeafGreen, the service will be able to scan the Pokedex in those games. Players will automatically get the Celebi gift if the Pokedex has been completed. Celebi was very rare in the GBA era, so this should be welcome news for a lot of people.

The Pokemon Home update will include some other notable changes, as well. Pokemon GO players will have the opportunity to transfer over Pokemon that were caught in Safari Balls, but Pokemon Home will instead read the capture device as a Strange Ball. Paid Pokemon Home subscribers will also be able to hold up to 9,000 Pokemon in boxes, which is an increase from the current 6,000. Not all subscribers will need that amount of space, but it should be beneficial with Pokemon Winds and Waves coming in 2027.

With a grand total of 1,025 Pokemon in the National Pokedex, players need to put in a lot of effort to catch ’em all in the modern era. Allowing players to transfer those caught in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen should be a help, especially for those that might not have played Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee or that play Pokemon GO. The more options there are to complete the Pokedex, the better, especially when it means that players can then continue to use these Pokemon in other games.
