New Official Prince of Persia Release Available Now

A newly upgraded official version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is available now on GOG, bringing the 2003 classic up to modern PC standards. Ubisoft’s original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time helped define the franchise during the PS2 era through its mixture of acrobatic platforming, puzzles, combat, and time-manipulation mechanics, and it also influenced some of the publisher’s biggest games today.

GOG’s timing is particularly notable following the cancellation of Ubisoft’s long-troubled Sands of Time remake. Originally announced in 2020 as a full-scale recreation featuring new visuals, updated combat, and other changes, the project endured years of delays before Ubisoft officially stopped development in January 2026, saying it could not reach the required quality without committing more time and investment. The publisher stressed that the decision did not mean it was abandoning Prince of Persia altogether, but it nevertheless left fans without the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake they had been waiting years to play.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake’s Full Development History Explained

The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake had a troubled development journey, spanning over six years before its ultimate cancellation in 2026.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Gets Major Modern PC Upgrade

Launching on August 18, 2026, GOG’s update to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time modernizes the existing PC release in some major ways. Version 181 GOG v2 adds native widescreen and ultrawide support across modern resolutions, automatically adjusts the field of view based on the player’s aspect ratio, introduces an FPS limiter, and adds a multi-monitor mouse-lock option. An F11 overlay also lets users adjust frame-rate limits and FOV multipliers without having to exit the game. The new Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time PC version is also Windows 11 verified, DRM-free, playable offline, and does not require the GOG Galaxy client to launch, bringing the whole game up to modern standards in a very pro-ownership way. It is currently discounted to $2.99 through August 23, down from its regular $9.99 price.

The revamped PC version goes beyond simply stretching the original image to fit modern displays. GOG has implemented a “lightweight wrapper” designed to resolve hardware incompatibilities while preserving the game’s original behavior, including proper camera scaling for wider aspect ratios. Some restrictions do remain by design, such as the main menu staying within its original 4:3 boundaries to avoid breaking hard-coded interface assets, while the ultrawide FOV adjustments are capped to prevent visual glitches. The end product is an official Sands of Time PC version that eliminates many of the workarounds older games can require on newer hardware.

However, players should still keep their expectations in check. This version of Sands of Time doesn’t include any redesigned environments, new character models, combat changes, or broader visual overhauls. Instead, GOG has taken a preservation-focused approach, leaving the 2003 game largely intact while addressing technical issues that have accumulated over more than two decades. That makes the release valuable in a different way, especially for anyone who wants to experience the original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time without first tracking down unofficial fixes online. GOG also promises continued technical support and lifetime maintenance through its Preservation Program.

Moreover, this release could have big implications for PC game preservation in the future. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the first game to benefit from GOG’s new lightweight wrapper technology, which intercepts parts of the original DirectX 9 game and applies modern fixes without fundamentally altering its code. That lets GOG address issues with frame rates, field of view, widescreen resolutions, and other compatibility problems that can emerge when older games run on current hardware, while still preserving the original experience. The canceled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake may never arrive, but the original game has received an unexpectedly improved modern release, and the technology created to preserve it could eventually give many other aging PC classics the same treatment.
