Modern Warfare 4 Hit with Backlash Over AI Art

Modern Warfare 4 Hit with Backlash Over AI Art

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is facing backlash after players spotted several pieces of in-game artwork they suspect were created using generative AI. The controversy comes as the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Early Access multiplayer beta is underway, but the broader use of AI isn’t entirely surprising, since Activision has already disclosed that generative AI tools helped create some in-game assets.

That disclosure has made players especially attentive to artwork appearing throughout the beta. Activision has previously faced similar criticism surrounding AI-generated or suspected generative content in recent Call of Duty releases, including calling cards and other cosmetic artwork. Infinity Ward has not provided a detailed breakdown of how generative AI is used in MW4, leaving players to identify possible examples themselves. That history has made everything from posters to advertisements part of the wider Call of Duty AI debate.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 Will Be Dead on Arrival if It Misses One Crucial Performance Target

Modern Warfare 4 will bring Call of Duty back to a Nintendo platform for the first time since 2013, and it needs to live up to that.

Modern Warfare 4 Players Aren’t Happy About Its Apparent AI Art

Now that fans have gotten their hands on the Modern Warfare 4 beta, several of those images have started circulating online. On Twitter, DANNYonPC highlighted environmental artwork featuring illustrated characters that players believe shows unusual geometry and inconsistent details commonly associated with AI generation. Other posts from the same user and from additional fans on Twitter and Reddit highlight gacha machines and posters with similarly unusual artwork. Activision has not confirmed any of these assets as AI-generated, so their origins remain uncertain. Still, the images have been enough to put the Modern Warfare 4 beta under additional scrutiny.

Player reaction has been predictably divided. Critics argue that a franchise as successful as Call of Duty should be paying artists to create even relatively minor environmental details, especially when those elements help establish the personality of multiplayer maps. Others worry that MW4 could continue a trend seen in recent entries, where generative AI becomes increasingly noticeable in finished assets. Some players are less bothered, either questioning whether every highlighted image is actually AI-generated or arguing that background advertisements have little effect on the MW4 multiplayer experience.

The discussion also comes shortly after another unusual MW4 art controversy. An official Call of Duty social media account briefly posted promotional artwork ahead of Gamescom that quickly drew attention for its strange details, including an oddly rendered weapon and a character pose similar to the box art of Battlefield 3. The image was later removed, with a social media representative explaining that it was a temporary render from an internal marketing guide that had been published by mistake. While AI in marketing has become more prevalent, the recently discovered alleged generative content appears to affect players more directly than a simple advertising image, since it appears right inside Call of Duty multiplayer maps.

The larger question is no longer whether generative AI played some role in MW4‘s development, since the game’s own disclosure on Steam already confirms that. What remains unclear is how extensively those tools are being used and whether players are correctly identifying the finished assets they helped create. That question carries extra weight because Infinity Ward has emphasized authenticity and environmental detail while discussing the game’s South Korean settings and the research behind them. The beta still gives the studio time to adjust anything that does not meet its standards, but suspected AI imagery is likely to remain part of the Modern Warfare 4 conversation as players continue examining its maps ahead of launch.
