Digimon World Making a Comeback

Digimon World Making a Comeback

Digimon has never exactly struggled to find its way onto new hardware, as Digimon Story: Time Stranger resonated well with many fans, but some of its older games like Digimon World have been much harder to revisit than the franchise itself. At least one of those older PS1 games is now playable on PC.

Of course, it’s worth noting that gamers are going to need their own copy of this PS1 game, so it’s still somewhat difficult for those who don’t already own the game to revisit. But between the barrier of owning a disc and the right hardware, the latest fan project makes playing Digimon World a little easier now.

More Digimon Games Could Be On the Way

Bandai Namco hints at continued collaborations with Toei Animation for future Digimon games following the success of Time Stranger.

Digimon World PC Recompilation Project

The new native Digimon World PC version is currently available as version 0.1.0, with support for the North American release of Digimon World (SLUS-01032). The project uses static recompilation to translate the original PlayStation MIPS code into C before compiling it for Windows. It requires players to provide their own compatible game copy, meaning the current build does not support the Japanese or European versions. Once everything is set up, though, Digimon World can run directly on a modern PC.

The PC version also adds several upgrades that make the 1990s RPG much easier to play today. Players can run Digimon World in 16:9 widescreen, increase the internal resolution to as much as four times the original, use a CRT-style filter, and cut down the long loading pauses caused by the original PlayStation CD-ROM. Save states and rewind are included too (although the original save system remains intact), giving players some modern conveniences without replacing the way the game was originally designed.

There are also optional gameplay changes for anyone who remembers just how demanding Digimon World could be. A built-in mod panel can extend a partner’s lifespan, slow the world clock, improve technique-learning chances, reduce evolution requirements, change training gains, or even prevent a Digimon from dying. GameShark-style cheats are also available, but none of these changes are required, meaning players can turn them off and experience the original systems as intended.

Ultimately, though, Digimon World remains everything it has always been. Players must still work on rebuilding File Island, recruiting Digimon, training a partner, managing its needs, and figuring out how its care affects Digivolution (including eventually raising a new partner when its lifespan ends). There are still some setup hurdles with this early build, but for a game that began life on the original PlayStation, getting a native Windows version is an impressive way to bring Digimon World back to modern players.
