One Highly Anticipated Open-World RPG Is Getting Awfully Close to Be Skipping Gamescom 2026 ONL

Gamescom 2026 is undoubtedly one of the biggest events of the year, so it would have seemed like the perfect opportunity for the next Kingdom Come game to debut. That wasn’t the case, though, and considering developer Warhorse Studios’ ambitious launch timeline, that’s a bit surprising. Since Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was one of 2025’s biggest hits, a new Kingdom Come game is something that many probably weren’t expecting for several more years. However, Warhorse shocked fans earlier this year by revealing that the next chapter in the series could come as soon as 2027.

Warhorse confirmed that the new Kingdom Come game is expected to arrive sometime during the studio’s next fiscal year. That means the game could come out anywhere between April 2027 and March 2028. Even if the next Kingdom Come title doesn’t come until the tail end of the 2027 fiscal year, that’s still much quicker than I and many others were expecting for a new franchise addition. It still might be 2026, but April 2027 will sneak up on gamers, which made Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live event feel like a shoo-in for at least a little sneak peek premiere. A teaser trailer, or even a few images, would have been exciting, but it looks like Kingdom Come fans are going to be waiting a little while longer.

Elden Ring Is Great, But Kingdom Come 2 Is the Better Open-World RPG

While there are obvious reasons why some might call Elden Ring the greatest modern open-world RPG, it actually pales in comparison to another.

Of course, there’s no way to really know for sure. No one can predict the future, but missing Gamescom when the earliest possible launch date for the next Kingdom Come game is the first half of 2027 makes it seem like the game isn’t ready to be revealed. Warhorse Studios has a lot on its plate at the moment, so development could be a little slower than anticipated. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s sales numbers prove that the developer has a huge hit on its hands, but following that up has to be daunting.

Not only does the studio have to meet expectations with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s upcoming successor, but the team has also confirmed that a Warhorse Middle-earth RPG is even in the works. Those are two massive projects to undertake, so it only makes sense that Warhorse take things slow in order to avoid rushing the process.

April 2027 Might Have Always Been an Unrealistic Launch Window

Just because Warhorse Studios confirmed that the game would be coming out sometime in fiscal year 2027 doesn’t mean that April 2027 was ever a realistic possibility. It just happens to be part of the timeframe. Nothing is impossible, but a more likely scenario is that the next Kingdom Come game’s release date will be in fall/winter 2027 or early 2028.

The fall/winter window is almost always a big time for major releases. Granted, this year is a bit different because of the GTA 6 release date taking over the year’s end, but traditionally, fall and winter are solid times to release highly anticipated titles. There is also early 2028 to take into consideration. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 came out in February 2025, so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary for Warhorse to follow in those past steps.

The next Kingdom Come game might have a release window, but Warhorse Studios has been tight-lipped about when gamers should expect the Middle-earth RPG. Developing a project that belongs to such a beloved franchise as The Lord of the Rings and has such a large scope will probably take a while, so it’s very possible that it won’t arrive until the 2030s hit.

Beyond the release timeline, there really isn’t much known about the game other than that it’s set in the Kingdom Come universe. One of the most interesting details about the announcement is that Warhorse called it a “Kingdom Come adventure” instead of a direct threequel. This implies that it’s going to be more of a spin-off than a large-scale story the size of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but that’s still just as compelling. What’s even more interesting is that a new Kingdom Come trademark was recently filed by Warhorse for “Kingdom Come Salvation.” Even though Gamescom 2026 was skipped, filing this trademark could be a sign that production is going along smoothly.

Kingdom Come Still Has One More Chance to Make a Big Splash This Year

Events like Summer Game Fest and Gamescom are always massive stages for the industry, but the biggest event of the year is The Game Awards. Every year, The Game Awards hosts some of the biggest announcements of the year. 2025’s event revealed huge titles like Fate of the Old Republic and Larian Studios’ newest Divinity project. There’s no telling what this year’s Game Awards has in store for viewers, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Kingdom Come “adventure” made an appearance.

Kingdom Come Fans Should Mark This Date on the Calendar

  • December 10, 2026
  • The event will go live at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT

Now, it’s not a given that the new Kingdom Come game will be at The Game Awards, but I’m feeling pretty optimistic about it being one of the event’s announcements. Warhorse Studios could still showcase a teaser trailer or a release date, even if that date happens to be further away than April 2027. There are several games that I’m crossing my fingers to see at the awards show, and Kingdom Come is one of the titles at the top of my list. New Naughty Dog game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 1 remake are two others that I’m hoping to see.

Only time will tell when Warhorse Studios decides to debut the first look at its next Kingdom Come project. The developer has proven that it has what it takes to be the next big studio in the open-world RPG genre. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2‘s gameplay and story were one of the main highlights of 2025, and it’s going to be thrilling to finally see what Warhorse has up its sleeve next.
