Rockstar Games Issues New Official Statement on GTA 6 Generative AI Use

Rockstar Games has finally answered whether Grand Theft Auto 6‘s development will use generative AI. In an industry where generative AI is becoming more commonplace to aid development, many GTA 6 fans have wondered whether Rockstar will utilize the controversial technology, with the answer now clear.

Generative AI is an extremely divisive subject among gamers. With the huge number of layoffs across the gaming industry in recent years, many see it as a way for studios to cut costs and get more output from fewer developers. There is also the argument of whether it is truly art, in the same way that human-made artwork is. On the other side of the coin, many gamers simply do not care about the process, as long as they enjoy the final product. Others see it as inevitable, especially as the technology continues to improve rapidly. Given that GTA 6 is expected to be the biggest video game launch of all time by some margin, it makes sense that gamers would be curious to see if Rockstar had used generative AI along the way.

GTA 6 officially confirms the first character returning from a previous game in the series in its Extended Look.

GTA 6 Contains No Generative AI Use, Rockstar Confirms

Kinda Funny Games recently made the trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, to visit Rockstar North ahead of GTA 6‘s recent Extended Look. While there, they spoke with co-studio head Rob Nelson and asked about whether GTA 6 used generative AI during its development. Nelson’s response was as straightforward as it gets, leaving no room for interpretation, saying, “No.”

Ultimately, it makes sense that GTA 6 would avoid generative AI during development. A significant number of gamers are so staunchly anti-AI that they will avoid anything that uses it. GTA 6 is the most obvious slam-dunk success, perhaps ever, and there is no reason to engage in something that is likely to put off many fans. It’s not as though Rockstar has been rushing to launch the game either, speed being the main positive of generative AI. It has delayed GTA 6 multiple times, and there is no reason to suggest it wouldn’t have delayed it again had it needed even more time beyond its current November 19, 2026, release date.

When speaking to Kinda Funny Games, Nelson also addressed whether GTA 6 would have microtransactions, confirming that it will not. It’s great news for fans that Rockstar is looking to avoid these practices, especially since GTA Online‘s microtransactions have been an enormous source of income for the company over the years. Whether this will change with the eventual release of GTA 6‘s expected online portion remains to be seen.

Following the 26-minute GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix, it’s officially time for the game’s marketing to go into full swing. Between now and November 19, fans can expect to see even more from the highly anticipated game. People have already started to scour every frame of the recent Extended Look for any potential GTA 6 Easter eggs, and no doubt there will be plenty more footage to digest and pick apart before November 19.
