New Official SNES Release Confirmed for 2027

A classic action platformer that was initially released on the SNES in 1993 has been confirmed to be receiving a physical re-release in 2027. It is not every day that fans of the beloved SNES get to hear about new games coming to the console. However, there has been some good news for retro gaming fans in recent months, including this new game confirmed for 2027.

Another piece of good news came when Mr. Nutz was also confirmed to be getting a re-release on both the SNES and Sega Genesis. For those unfamiliar, Mr. Nutz is a classic 2D platformer that’s seen as one of the pioneers of the genre in many ways. Now, SNES users can also look forward to another re-release, this time for an even bigger and more widely recognized title.

As reported by Time Extension, the cult-favorite 2D action platformer First Samurai will be receiving a physical re-release. The editions and prices haven’t been revealed as of this writing, and the only thing confirmed by the publisher is that the game is coming at “the start of 2027.” The company behind this new release is 33 Games, which has previously re-released classic Amiga games like Zool and Utopia: The Creation of a Nation on the SNES and Sega Mega Drive.

First Samurai was also initially released on the Amiga before being ported to other platforms, including the SNES, following its popularity. The SNES version is particularly famous for its changes to the level design, with many considering it the more polished edition of the original game. First Samurai was moderately successful commercially in the 90s and was also seen as one of the best samurai games of the decade.

In First Samurai, players take on the role of a warrior on a quest to avenge his murdered master. What sets the game apart from other action platformers of the 90s is the way it uses simple gameplay mechanics to create engaging challenges. For example, in most chapters, players need to collect some magical pieces that can eventually help them unlock a path, almost in a Metroidvania fashion. Players in First Samurai can also decide when to activate a checkpoint, allowing them to access different parts of the map strategically.

Those looking for new SNES collectibles will definitely want to keep an eye out for First Samurai‘s re-release by 33 Games. The company is known for creating exclusive collector’s editions and limited-edition bundles that also aim to preserve part of these classic games’ history. 33 Games has also teased that it has acquired the license for a major IP that will be revealed soon, so that’s something else fans of retro games may want to keep an eye on. Additionally, for anyone interested in checking out First Samurai and its sequel, Second Samurai, on modern consoles, there’s a bundle called The Samurai Collection by QUByte Classics that’s available on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Both First Samurai and Second Samurai have also been released digitally on Steam.
