Fable Players Are Doubling Down on the Open-World RPG’s Most Important Feature

Fable Players Are Doubling Down on the Open-World RPG’s Most Important Feature

From its origins, Fable has been about more than just its story, its combat, and even the quests players take on in their efforts to save the world or assist the citizens of Albion with tasks both mundane and bizarre. Unlike many other RPGs, Fable has been about creating a second life of sorts within a fantasy world where it feels like almost anything is possible—where the choices you make follow you wherever you go and ultimately determine how the road ahead is laid. Yes, its stories have had heart, its characters have had depth, and its combat has had spark, but Fable‘s most important feature, the part that truly makes it feel like a fantasy role-playing game, is the life it lets you build in its wonderfully whimsical world. And fans of the upcoming Fable reboot by Playground Games are once again proving that point, as they double down on their previously revealed intentions with the game.

Recently, I wrote an article about a post on Fable‘s official X account that invited fans to participate in a sort of survey revolving around what they would spend their hard-earned gold on in the game. After using the comments beneath said X post to form a decent sample, I determined that most players (77% of those who responded to the prompt) are intent on investing heavily in the game’s life-sim features—like raising a family, running businesses, and flipping real estate. What made this especially interesting is the controversy around Fable‘s confirmed 30–40 hour length, specifically due to the fact that it feels far too short, to some, for an open-world RPG. However, here they are again, doubling down on the side of the aisle where Fable can, according to Playground Games, be played infinitely. That is, the fantasy life-sim portion of the game that has always been at the heart of the franchise.

Fable Is Breaking a Massive Unwritten Rule of Open-World RPGs

Fable is going against one of the biggest expectations surrounding modern open-world RPGs, and the decision could work heavily in its favor.

Once Again, Fable Players Prefer the Fantasy Life Over the Heroic Story

Where things get really interesting is that Fable‘s official X account recently asked players another question, and this one had almost nothing to do with money. Instead, the account simply asked what the first thing players planned to do once they got to Bowerstone would be. Naturally, there were plenty of answers involving kicking chickens—because this is Fable we’re talking about here—but once I started going through the responses, I noticed something very familiar happening. Once again, a huge chunk of players weren’t talking about the story, combat, or even questing. They were talking about building a life.

Console in One

Put the consoles in the correct order.

Of the 50 replies in the sample I looked at that actually answered the question being asked, 36 of them, or roughly 72% of those players, leaned toward Fable‘s life-sim or sandbox side in some capacity. That includes everything from buying homes and businesses to getting jobs, shopping for clothes, finding a spouse, having children, interacting with NPCs, and generally settling into Bowerstone before worrying too much about whatever grand adventure they’ve been called to as Albion’s new Hero.

Now, obviously, just like the last time I did this, that’s still a fairly small sample, and I’m certainly not suggesting 72% of everyone who plays Fable is going to immediately forget the main story exists. But that’s also what makes this second sample so interesting to me. The previous post was specifically about what players planned to spend their gold on, so there was at least an argument to be made that the question itself naturally encouraged people to talk about property, businesses, and other parts of the game’s life sim. This time, Playground basically handed players a blank check. It asked what they wanted to do first in Bowerstone, and roughly seven out of every 10 relevant responses still ended up somewhere around the life-sim side of the game.

This sample only includes direct replies to Fable‘s post that clearly answered the question being asked. Replies that were jokes, reactions, unrelated comments, localization requests, or otherwise didn’t indicate what the player planned to do first in Bowerstone were excluded.

Some of those players aren’t exactly hiding their priorities, either. User @ArtemisOdinson said they plan to get a job and buy every building available before “the story can continue.” User @Germis34954388 said they intend to do “everything except quest or story.” User @TheAgentShark apparently wants to find a blacksmith, get a job, find a chicken, and kick it, which is about as efficient a summary of the Fable experience as I could probably come up with. And there are plenty of other players in the comments who say they’re already planning their marriages, their families, their property empires, their wardrobes, and even which parts of Bowerstone they want to memorize before they’ve spent a single minute actually playing the game.

And again, that’s almost exactly what happened the last time Fable asked its community a question like this. That first sample landed at 77% of relevant replies pointing toward the life-sim or sandbox portion of the game. This one landed at 72%. Two different questions, two different sets of responses, and both of them have roughly three-quarters of the players answering in a way that suggests being a Hero might not always be at the top of their list.

Fable’s Life Sim Is Starting to Look Like the Main Event

In other words, that’s why I don’t really see Fable‘s life systems as some collection of side activities designed to keep players busy between quests. They may technically exist outside the main story, but at this point, fans are repeatedly showing that what is arguably Fable‘s most important feature is one of the main reasons they want to play the game in the first place. I say it’s the most important feature, because it’s one of the main things that sets Fable apart from other RPGs, not just because it lets players do one thing or another, but because they can essentially do it all. Even games like Skyrim that let players purchase a home don’t allow the kind of open sandbox that Fable offers, and players are already proving that they’re here for it.

In fact, only one of the 50 relevant replies in this latest sample explicitly said the first thing they planned to do was complete the story. Again, I’m not taking that to mean players don’t care about Fable‘s story, because that would obviously be ridiculous. But I do think it says something about what people picture when they imagine themselves stepping into Albion. Rather than only imagining themselves as the Hero, they’re imagining who they’re going to marry, where they’re going to live, what they’re going to own, how they’re going to make money, and what kind of completely unnecessary trouble they’re going to get into along the way.

That’s what Fable has always done differently, and Playground seems to understand that. The main story will eventually end, and the quests will eventually run dry. Albion itself, though, is being built around the franchise’s best feature—one that can apparently keep going for as long as players are willing to mess with them. Based on two completely separate samples now, a lot of Fable players seem more than willing.
