Nintendo has quietly dropped a new update for the Super Mario franchise that many fans might have missed. Super Mario is Nintendo’s flagship franchise, with each major Nintendo console having its own main series Super Mario game to call its own. Normally, Nintendo makes sure that a Super Mario game releases for its consoles within a year of launch if not on launch day itself, but the Switch 2 has proven to be an exception to the rule.
No new Super Mario game has been announced for Switch 2 just yet, even though we are nearing Year 3 of the console’s existence. Some fans expected Nintendo to finally announce the long-awaited 3D Super Mario Switch 2 game at the latest Nintendo Direct, but that presentation came and went without so much as a mention of such a project. While the long wait for Super Mario on Switch 2 certainly marks the end of an era, there is some motion when it comes to the franchise.
Nintendo Just Changed the Super Mario Franchise Logo
Nintendo has updated the Super Mario logo on its official website, as spotted by Master0fHyrule on Twitter. The tweet showing the new logo included a look at the previous logos so fans can check them out for comparison. The OG Super Mario franchise logo introduced in 1996 lasted until 2011, while the latest logo was used from 2011 to 2026. The new logo has a sleeker, glossier look, though it maintains the colorful vibes of the previous logos. Nintendo updating the Super Mario logo doesn’t necessarily mean that a new game announcement is coming any time soon, but it’s still an interesting development.
While Nintendo itself has yet to announce the Switch 2 Super Mario game, leaks have pointed to the project launching at some point in late 2027. There are rumblings that the game will be an open world game, ala Bowser’s Fury, but that remains to be seen. If Nintendo is releasing its next Super Mario game in fall 2027 as expected, it’s possible that an announcement will come at the next Nintendo Direct or another upcoming event, like The Game Awards in December. However, the more likely scenario is that Nintendo will wait until we are much closer to the next Super Mario game’s release date before revealing it to the public. Think a timeline similar to how the Ocarina of Time remake was revealed at the June Nintendo Direct and is going to be released just five months later in November.
Beyond main series Super Mario games, it’s quite likely that more spin-off titles will be released in 2027 as well. Switch 2 already has its own Mario Kart and Mario Tennis, but Mario Golf has yet to make an appearance. There’s also been a great deal of fan demand for a new Super Mario baseball game, but who knows if that will happen. Regardless, fans can rest assured that plenty more games starring Mario are on the horizon.
And with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie grossing over $1 billion worldwide, a third entry in the film franchise is virtually guaranteed as well. Nintendo is currently busy working on The Legend of Zelda movie, but more Super Mario movies are almost assuredly in the pipeline.
