A former Grand Theft Auto 6 developer has publicly discussed the possibility of the game coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. While there are currently no public plans to release GTA 6 for the hybrid console, many Nintendo Switch 2 owners have held onto hope that it’s still in the cards.
Fans of the franchise are eagerly awaiting the rapidly-approaching release of Grand Theft Auto 6, but some gamers will be left out. The game is releasing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, but PC and Nintendo Switch 2 gamers have been left wondering if and when they’ll get their opportunity to play. While CEO Strauss Zelnick recently indicated that PC is an important market for Take-Two Interactive, meaning that a release is likely in the cards, the Nintendo Switch 2 might be a different matter.
Dev Talks GTA 6 on Nintendo Switch 2
Former Rockstar Games developer Jérémy Hartvick addressed the possibility of the Nintendo Switch 2 getting Grand Theft Auto 6 while being interviewed by YouTuber Kiwi Talkz. Hartvick explained that there are some factors working against the idea of the game coming to Nintendo Switch 2, beginning with the hardware power and capabilities of the device. The game would need to be adjusted in order to function on the device natively, which would mean more work for Rockstar Games. In his opinion, it doesn’t make sense for Rockstar to do so, because the studio would be going out of its way to “probably deliver a subpar experience.” However, he didn’t completely shut down the possibility.

Hartvick suggested that streaming GTA 6 on the Nintendo Switch 2 could be a potential workaround, saying that the possibility wasn’t completely “ludicrous.” As far as mobile devices go, he also indicated that the notion of GTA 6 running on a mobile phone isn’t out of the question, because the “technology exists and it has been proven.” However, he still seems dubious of the possibility, and noted that gamers will likely just purchase a console like the PS5 in order to play GTA 6. Further, he’s not sure that Nintendo Switch users are a solid target demographic for a game like Grand Theft Auto 6.
Recent developments surrounding GTA 6 seem to back up the notion of gamers flocking to consoles that can handle the game, rather than waiting for a possible port. PS5 Pro will provide the best GTA 6 experience at launch, and accordingly, the consoles have been flying off the shelves. Third-party sellers have increased the price of the systems considerably as a result, and demand remains high. Investing over $1,000 to play Grand Theft Auto 6 may be out of reach for some gamers, but those who have the means have been willing to put the money down.
Notably, the Nintendo Switch never got Grand Theft Auto 5, though a modder project recently put GTA 5 on the original Switch. The original Switch got Red Dead Redemption 13 years after its initial release, but it seems somewhat unlikely for Rockstar to put the resources into porting GTA 5 all these years later when GTA 6 will undoubtedly be its focus moving forward. While PC gamers will likely see GTA 6 sooner or later, Switch 2 owners might want to consider saving up to buy a console that can handle the game.
