s&box is a massive sandbox game-creation platform from Facepunch Studios, best known as the spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod. Built using Valve’s Source 2 engine, s&box gives players tools to create and play community-made games across a wide range of genres, with C# scripting, a scene-based editor, and other development tools available for creators. In simpler terms, it’s a game like Roblox‘s fan-made games, but with Valve tools. Players can jump between experiences made by the community, while creators can eventually publish their projects more broadly through Steam. The platform is less of a traditional standalone game and more of an open-ended framework for making, sharing, and playing user-created experiences.

Reviews for s&box are currently Mixed on Steam, with roughly 47% of reviews positive across more than 3000 submissions. Recent reviews are also Mixed, with the current rating sitting around 40% positive. Much of the reception centers on s&box’s potential as a successor to Garry’s Mod, with players praising its Source 2 foundation and creation tools while others criticize the current state of its community content and overall experience. Because s&box relies heavily on what its community creates, its reception is closely tied to the platform’s available games and ongoing development rather than a fixed campaign or traditional gameplay loop.
Sometimes Steam’s Free Weekend Promotions don’t happen because of sales, which some may have thought happened because of the new Steam Autumn Sale. The good news is that it’s still happening, and even its one game offers the variety the promotion is known for.
