Most people could easily agree that Grand Theft Auto is one of the most iconic franchises to have ever existed. Naturally, there are plenty of features that are just as memorable, such as being able to drive through the streets while listening to your favorite songs or the occasional talk show. Just like in real life, having the radio on while doing something else makes every experience way more enjoyable. This has been a big part of the franchise’s identity for years now, and for most people, it’s difficult to imagine a GTA game without it. Of course, no system can be perfect—or at least that was the case until now.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is ready to deliver an absolute game-changer. Rockstar Games has already confirmed that players will be able to listen to music through their characters’ phones and headphones even when they are outside of their vehicle. Moreover, there will also be podcasts available for Jason and Lucia to enjoy, which is certainly another pleasant surprise. Although at first glance it seems like these are relatively minor quality-of-life improvements, they actually may turn out to have a significant influence over the way players experience Leonida. More specifically, these simple additions could make the entire open world feel more alive.
GTA 6 Could Finally Give Players a Reason to Get Out of Their Cars
Unlike in real life, having a car in previous GTA games was not just a way to get from point A to point B. It was also a way for players to entertain themselves while driving around, and since the traditional radio stations were generally only accessible while driving, players would spend a significant amount of time inside their vehicles. Aside from the fact that this is quite unrealistic, it also creates a habit of never leaving the car to explore the world, which might often result in missing out on some pretty awesome content.
Put the consoles in the correct order.
And yes, it’s true that most of GTA‘s gameplay revolves around vehicles, but now that Rockstar is adding so many details to the new release, it would make sense why the studio is trying to make walking on foot a more appealing option. At the very least, if players only stay in their car, they are going to miss out on some very interesting NPC conversations, which would be a pity considering the variety of pedestrian interactions Rockstar has already showcased. Moreover, being able to listen to music while walking may encourage players to slow down and explore places they would otherwise never visit.
GTA 6’s Portable Audio Could Give Leonida’s Locations More Personality
Let’s be honest. In today’s world, walking around without having a podcast playing in the background just sounds miserable, and if Rockstar Games hadn’t considered this, it would have been, without a doubt, a huge waste of an opportunity. Thankfully, this is not the case, as the developers have confirmed that the upcoming game will feature the series’ largest and most diverse selection of podcasts and radio stations that the franchise has ever had. The latter category includes Cocoteo FM, Back Country, and Dirty South Classics, with each offering its own unique music genre.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
This impressive variety could be designed to complement all the different locations that Leonida has to offer. If you have ever gone on vacation while being obsessed with a particular song, you have probably spent the entire trip listening to it on repeat. From this moment on, whenever you hear this song, even years later, it will take you right back to that place. And maybe Rockstar is hoping to achieve the same effect with Grand Theft Auto 6 by giving players a chance to associate their favorite music with walking around the different locations in Leonida.
We already know that Rockstar is promising the biggest and most immersive evolution of GTA yet, so it’s safe to assume that making each location feel unique is quite a difficult task. However, Rockstar seems to be implementing details that may seem insignificant when we look at them individually, but when we combine them, they contribute to an insanely realistic experience. As far as podcasts are concerned, their specific topics have yet to be revealed. In any case, it would be cool if they could provide a deeper insight into Leonida’s culture or public attitudes. This could create the impression that Leonida has its own cultural and social life that exists beyond Jason and Lucia.
Listening to music or a podcast while walking around may sound ordinary, but this may be exactly the reason why it could contribute to making Leonida feel real. Of course, it’s difficult to predict how players will respond to this addition. It’s entirely possible that some people would prefer to keep listening to music only in their vehicle, even simply because of nostalgia. In any case, portable audio is most probably not going to be in the top five most impressive GTA 6 features, but there are most certainly plenty of reasons to believe that it would contribute to a more realistic experience.
