Tales of Eternia Remastered is an enhanced edition of the classic JRPG, bringing the PlayStation game to PC and modern consoles. Also known as Tales of Destiny 2, the original game launched in North America in 2001. However, the remastered version appears to be based on the PlayStation Portable release from 2006.
Tales of Eternia Remastered launched on October 15 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. On the PlayStation Store, the game holds an impressive user score of 4.7 out of 5, while Steam reviews show an average of 83% positive reception at the time of writing. Fans seem to particularly enjoy the new features and improved mechanics in Tales of Eternia Remastered compared to the original game.

The remastered game comes with noticeable visual improvements, especially in its environments. More importantly, Tales of Eternia now includes fully voice-acted English skits that were missing from the original game’s North American edition in the 2000s. The latest release in the Tales of game series also adds several quality-of-life features, including navigation markers on the world map, adjustable random encounter rates, a high-speed mode for auto-battles, and a new difficulty setting called Unknown.

According to publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment, “The remastered title introduces a new Graphics Mode and SFX Mode that allow players to switch freely between remastered and original visuals and sound effects.” Fans of classic Tales of games should also know that the story and characters remain unchanged. Without spoiling anything, Tales of Eternia follows a small party of heroes seeking to prevent an apocalyptic disaster known as the Grand Fall. The story’s co-protagonists are Reid Hershel, Farah, Keele, and Meredy, though players meet many other characters along the way.
The remastered edition also introduces new fight mechanics, such as Battle Retry and Quick Recovery.
Like many other classic retro JRPGs, Tales of Eternia features detailed combat mechanics. However, it emphasizes team formation and player commands, which can determine the outcome of each encounter. The remastered edition also introduces new fight mechanics, such as Battle Retry and Quick Recovery, to help beginners learn the gameplay faster and enjoy a more relaxed, story-focused journey. Commenting on these changes, Bandai Namco Entertainment said, “Gameplay is better than ever with the quality-of-life features that have been added.”
While the standard edition of Tales of Eternia Remastered costs $29.99, the game also has a Deluxe Edition priced at $49.99. The premium version includes a digital artbook, the original soundtrack with over 100 tracks, a super growth pack to help players improve their heroes, and an option to change the game’s background music to tracks from the legacy series. So far, players have reacted positively to both editions. It remains to be seen whether this will prompt Bandai Namco to consider more remasters of popular Tales of games in the future.
