Pokemon Developer Is Ending Major Updates for Its New RPG Just 2 Months After Launch

Game Freak is winding down major post-launch updates for Beast of Reincarnation just over two months after the action RPG made its debut. Beast of Reincarnation is ending significant post-launch support just after the Pokemon developer spent much of the game’s short life responding directly to plenty of player criticism.

Released on August 4, Beast of Reincarnation marked one of Game Freak’s most ambitious attempts to build something new outside of Pokemon, but its reception at launch was quite mixed. Players praised elements like Emma and Koo’s relationship and the parry-heavy combat, while criticism quickly formed around the camera, small text, performance, unskippable cutscenes, pacing, and various bugs. Just one day after launch, Game Freak promised a “series of continuous updates” based on that feedback, and director Kota Furushima later apologized for areas that failed to provide a sufficiently enjoyable experience. Since then, Game Freak has spent the weeks after release trying to improve Beast of Reincarnation almost as quickly as players were finding things they wanted to be changed.

Beast of Reincarnation Review Scores Prove Pokemon Developer Game Freak Clearly Has a Lane

The scores for Game Freak’s action RPG Beast of Reincarnation are officially in, and together, they suggest the Pokemon developer clearly has a lane.

Game Freak Is Winding Down Beast of Reincarnation Support

Now the game’s rapid update cycle appears to be coming to a close. On Twitter, Game Freak says the next Beast of Reincarnation patch is tentatively scheduled for October 19 and will be the “final patch in this ongoing phase of major post-launch updates,” ending the update cadence fans have been used to seeing since launch. The post’s wording doesn’t necessarily suggest Beast of Reincarnation will never receive another fix, as Game Freak is still inviting players to submit bug reports and feedback, but substantial updates at the same pace should no longer be expected. Nine patches in roughly two and a half months is hardly a lack of post-launch work, but Beast of Reincarnation‘s current state is still worth evaluating after only two months.

Fortunately, players starting the game today are getting a noticeably different experience from early adopters. Recent patches to Beast of Reincarnation have added multiple camera distances, larger subtitle options, ultrawide support, DLSS and FSR frame generation, broader control remapping, auto-pickup, additional difficulty settings, and increasingly comprehensive cutscene skipping. Game Freak also repeatedly adjusted combat, story pacing, enemy behavior, performance, and bugs. The most recent October 9 update went especially far by letting players bypass three entire mid-game regions after reaching the Great Wall Terraces, while PC players received an FOV slider. Someone starting Beast of Reincarnation today can enjoy a noticeably less frustrating game than the one fans got in August, even if patches can’t realistically rewrite every criticism aimed at its story, level design, or overall structure.

Player reactions to the end of major support have ranged from praise for Game Freak delivering nine patches to questions about why a game with lingering technical complaints is winding down its update cycle so soon. Some players commenting on the announcement have also expressed disappointment that such an ambitious original Game Freak project seems to have come and gone relatively quickly. While the recent patches appear to have improved Beast of Reincarnation, they haven’t transformed it into a fundamentally different game or fully addressed the problems that led to its lukewarm reputation.

What happens next is less clear. Beast of Reincarnation is a complete single-player RPG, and the studio hasn’t announced DLC, an expansion, or a sequel, but the door could still be open for this franchise as Game Freak works on its next game. Still, with major support winding down, the October patch may offer the clearest picture yet of what the Pokemon developer considers the finished version of its ambitious new experiment. Whether Emma and Koo ever get another adventure is another question entirely.
