Stardew Valley 1.7’s New Romances Make Its Forgotten Friendships Hard to Ignore

After more than 500 hours in Stardew Valley, I can safely say Pelican Town never gets old. Well, not entirely. I’ve married enough villagers to have my favorites (Haley and Leah, if you’re curious), and these days, I use mods like Stardew Valley Expanded to keep things fresh. So, the announcement that Stardew Valley 1.7 will introduce Clint and Sandy as marriage candidates is exciting, but it also got me thinking about the characters who deserve more attention without a romance route.

Stardew Valley has always offered more than marriage, letting players develop relationships through gifts, conversations, and heart events. Yet friendships can sometimes feel like an activity players complete on the way to other goals. My favorite non-marriage candidates are Willy and Marlon, two characters whose personalities and roles in the valley make them interesting without romance (though I wouldn’t be upset about romancing Willy). Adding new spouses is great, but giving existing friendships more depth could make Pelican Town feel even more alive.

Stardew Valley Reveals New Marriage Candidates for Update 1.7

Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe celebrates the 10th Anniversary of the beloved game by revealing new marriage candidates for Update 1.7.

The announcement that Clint and Sandy will become marriage candidates gives players a new reason to revisit two familiar faces. Sandy runs the Oasis in the Calico Desert, while Clint is Pelican Town’s resident blacksmith. Both already have established places in the game’s world, making their romance routes an opportunity to expand relationships players have known for years. Sandy’s life outside town makes her particularly interesting, while Clint’s feelings for Emily give his storyline room for further development.

As someone who has spent hundreds of hours getting to know these characters, I love seeing ConcernedApe revisit familiar faces. Still, the most exciting possibility isn’t just having two more people to marry. Their new routes could encourage a broader approach to character development, including for players who prefer friendship to romance. The full details remain to be seen, but there’s plenty of potential to make the wider social experience more rewarding, especially for fans who find the current Stardew Valley friendship system limiting.

Friendship in Stardew Valley Can Feel Like a Stepping Stone

Friendship is already a major part of Stardew Valley. Talking to villagers, remembering their favorite gifts, and attending festivals help players become part of the community. Heart events reveal personal struggles and details hidden behind characters’ everyday routines. Even after hundreds of hours, learning something new about a familiar villager can remind me why Pelican Town feels like more than a collection of shops and schedules.

However, friendship progression can become transactional. I’ve certainly delivered gifts purely to reach a heart event. Romance offers a more obvious long-term reward through marriage and building a shared life, while friendships can feel largely complete once their main scenes are unlocked. More evolving dialogue and additional events could give players reasons to keep checking in on characters they already know, rather than treating friendship as another task to finish.

Willy and Marlon Deserve More Attention

Willy and Marlon are two characters I’d love to see explored further. Willy’s life as a fisherman gives him a distinct place in the valley, while Marlon’s connection to the Adventurer’s Guild hints at a life full of experiences beyond what players see during their regular visits. Neither needs a romance route to be interesting, and that’s exactly why they make good examples of the friendships and character relationships that could benefit from more attention.

Additional dialogue, personal quests, or friendship events could reveal more about their histories and daily lives. I’d love to hear more of Willy’s fishing stories or learn about Marlon’s adventures in the mines. These additions wouldn’t need to be huge to make a difference. A few meaningful interactions could make both characters feel more developed and give longtime players like me something new to discover.

Stardew Valley Does Not Need Every Friendship to Lead to Romance

Part of Stardew Valley‘s appeal is the freedom to approach relationships however players want. Some prioritize marriage and family, while others focus on friendships, community projects, or farm life. Krobus already offers an alternative to conventional romance by allowing players to invite him to become a roommate. It shows that a close relationship can be meaningful without following the usual path toward marriage.

Expanding platonic relationships through friendship-specific activities, personal milestones, and changing dialogue would give players more reasons to maintain them. It could even make romance more meaningful by giving players a genuine alternative. I’d still happily choose Haley or Leah on another playthrough, but I’d also love to see other characters receive more attention without needing to become marriage candidates.

Clint and Sandy becoming marriage candidates is an appealing addition to a game that has continued to evolve years after its original release. However, adding spouses is only one way to expand its social experience. The existing cast already has the personalities and relationships needed to support further development, and giving friendships more room to grow could be just as valuable as introducing new romance routes. Building a life in the valley is about more than choosing who to marry; it’s also about becoming part of a community. If the upcoming update 1.7 makes those friendships more rewarding, it could strengthen one of the game’s most enduring qualities.
