The Nintendo Switch 2 is getting a brand-new horror game on November 19, the very same day that players will finally be able to get their hands on Grand Theft Auto 6. Titled Beyond the Mist, this upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game offers a retro-inspired experience from a solo indie developer.
From the moment Grand Theft Auto 6 officially locked in its November 19 release date, developers and publishers started to steer their upcoming releases clear of the same month. Compared to the last few months, November looks like a wasteland for video game releases, with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake taking up all the air in the first week of the month, and GTA 6 storming its way in two weeks later. But with GTA 6 only launching on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, some savvy/bold PC and Switch developers have decided to seize the rare opportunity to market their games alongside Rockstar’s juggernaut. Beyond the Mist is one such game.
Beyond the Mist Launches on Nintendo Switch on November 19
Beyond the Mist is a throwback interactive horror game directly inspired by classic Game Boy games of the 1990s. Publisher RAWRLAB Games has just confirmed that Beyond the Mist will launch on Steam on October 31, and on Nintendo Switch (and Switch 2 via backwards compatibility) on November 19, the same day that Grand Theft Auto 6 hits digital store shelves. According to a recent press release, Beyond the Mist will retail for $5.99 and will receive a 20% launch discount during its first week on platforms, presumably bringing the price down to $4.79.
Described on Steam as a “suspenseful horror adventure,” Beyond the Mist will see players assume the role of Arthur Webb, an aging lighthouse keeper who must care for the towering structure through the winter. During the day, players must complete their repetitive chores and ensure the lighthouse remains functional, but at night, they’ll be haunted by unsettling dreams and eerie apparitions.
Gameplay-wise, Beyond the Mist appears to play most similarly to an interactive visual novel, with players cycling through dialogue, sifting through menus, solving various puzzles, and making choices. There are three different endings to strive for in Beyond the Mist, along with multiple branching narrative paths for players to explore. Beyond the Mist will also feature original 8-bit music and an original instrumental soundtrack composed by Gjoll.
Being developed by Yliader, Beyond the Mist is actually a major reimagining of the dev’s Game Boy Itch.io game The Mist, which can be played in-browser or purchased as a physical cartridge that’s actually compatible with the original Game Boy Color. Yliader’s other projects include the alchemy game Prima Materia, the mystic adventure game Cairn, and the micro strategy game Brumes. For Beyond the Mist‘s Steam and Switch release, Yliader has teamed up with publisher RAWRLAB Games, who’s best known for its work assisting solo indie developers.
